agree. there will be no pay wall. Members can post their content publicly or privately and non-members can view public content

I can't put my finger on it, but something feels unbalanced. So, are paid users simply paying for the ability to post private updates? Or are they paying for access to other users' private updates?

It seems like they're paying to post updates. It will be read-only of public posts for non-members.
