... but why? Why would anyone want to buy candy from sketchy drug-adjacent street vendors when they could just go to a convenience store?

Cheaper. Candy is stolen or originally bought for free with food stamps.

Would not be shocked if it's a combination of people wanting cheap stuff, and I wonder if the addicts themselves contribute. Sugary foods get calories into you and you can usually get them down without effecting the stomach.

If I was in a bad place, I could a good deal on candy being a godsend. Doesn't really spoil either. Wouldn't be shocked if the dopamine rush helps sometimes with "in-between times", though I'm betting it's not gonna do much for withdrawl.

Is this satire? Genuinely asking.

For many years I've been aware that I consume way too much sugar, and I've often labeled myself as a sugar addict to my friends.... But not really... I don't have withdrawal pain when I don't have sugar, I just crave it.

Sugar is the hardest addiction and one of the most frustrating of my life. It is upsetting to walk through grocery stores, knowing what I'll find on the labels of 80% of the goods inside, brightly labeled, at eye height. It's triggering.

It ruins my skin, spikes my insulin, and has more of a tag-on compounding effect than cannabis, nitrous, alcohol, caffeine or nicotine. If I over indulge sugar two days in a row, it's over. I will have spikes and intense hunger pains, and it will take days of re-regulating to get back to not needing regular spikes of insulin to keep sane. Maybe this is partially related to having previously been overweight, not sure.

It's a drug, and my world has changed as I've changed my relationship with food as a result of religiously reading labels. Also, it's just a war. It's a handful of processed food producers who direct benefit from addicted unhealthy consumers, who have normalized garbage in our diets. I'm tired of being their rube.

I absolutely see myself as a sugar addict. It's crazy how when these cravings appear, I can't focus on anything but getting a sweet snack. I remember trying the keto diet a few years ago, and waking up in the middle of the night yearning for sugar and not being able to find sleep until dawn.

It's also very interesting how I can resist the feeling of hunger, but not those sugar cravings
