That's being rather generous re: the average consumer. Grandma with her retirement savings doesn't want to hear that her bank got robbed. You can try to explain to people that their money is safe by law but it doesn't mean public trust doesn't somewhat erode.

It’s not, it’s the only reason a huge chunk of the population that lived through the financial crisis trusts banks at all.
