As someone from the Southeast US, I don’t think anyone did shoes off inside as a rule, and my mom is one of those hospital-level neat freaks where stuff is “filthy” if it doesn’t smell of bleach.

Then again, as a kid my friends and I ran around barefoot most of the time outside of school hours. To this day, I don’t really like wearing shoes or socks, and would happily walk around barefoot if socially acceptable.
