Climate change might necessitate portable filtration systems like this. Breathing in particulate matter from forest fires is worse that smoking 60 a day, it is a certain health hazard. Crazy to think that the air pollution in NYC isn't actually coming directly from industrial pollution or car exhaust, but indirectly from heating up the earth so that it catches fire

Climate change will require burning fewer resources to make less stuff.

“Oh it’s getting hotter from industrial activity, better instigate more industrial activity to solve it” is the dumbest dumb idea.

I wonder if the pitch for this product was "Yeah I know it looks stupid, but trust me, we humans are not going to stop fucking up the planet, and when the alternative is choking on dust, no one will care if they look stupid wearing one of these."

Next, Dyson Stillsuit?

Hmm my cynic-o-meter reads 3.6. Not grear, but not terrible...

People who buy dysons aren’t known for critical thinking and decision making.

Dyson identifies problems and then markets things that are targeted toward solving the problem. Not that actually solve the problem.

There’s more money in the search than the find.

People are concerned about air quality and n95 and higher respirators are ugly and uncomfortable and don’t signal wealth. The Dyson zone costs $1000 so people who don’t like air pollution, have money, and don’t know what to do now have something.

That being said, I would absolutely buy a stillsuit if it even did 1% of what a real stillsuit does.

In Neal Stephenson’s recent novel, Termination Shock, he writes about “earth suites” that people use to help mitigate heat and sun from climate change. I assume this is based on something available or hacked together so I’m on the lookout for a stillsuit.

She’s combining it with a badly-worn (note the gaps along her glasses) N95-mask. Which is just exposing yourself to pollution with extra steps.

This video is silly.

The app says it’s filtering, and the device is. But she’s not wearing her respirator properly so she smells smoke.

And since she’s wearing it improperly (and was probably not fit tested) the mask isn’t accomplishing what she wants.

This is basically a video that says “I can afford a Dyson zone and have no idea what I’m doing.”

This is Verge, one of the job requirements is complete cluelessness about the subject matter. Here is them doing a PC build tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lmfF0k2UcU

There is not seal on the Dyson device. It is impossible to "wear it properly" in a way that prevents non-filtered air from getting into your lungs.

For those you like YA sci-fi, this really reminds me of the "Want"[0] novel, where custom suits with are filtration are sold to the rich in order to protect them from a really polluted city air.

Such a frustrating article. Does it work! That's all I want to know! This is such a trash article. The author clearly wanted to tackle this topic -it's a good topic, but didn't actually find any pre-existing concrete facts that could answer the question and so just wrote the article without answering the question.

Are wildfire particles bigger or smaller than 0.1 microns? I don't know, this article doesn't say, and without that knowledge you can't say the Dyson Zone works in this case.

On top of that, it's not actually clear to me that the Zone actually works as a product at all - yes the air that goes through the filters gets filtered to some scientifically measurable degree, but does that filtered actually get into your lungs? Because the mask is not sealed, so it's perfectly possible when you take a deep breath you just suck in a tonne of air from around the mask and so your 99.9% pure air is suddenly 50:50 mixed with completely impure air.

There is not seal. It sends a flow of filtered air towards your nostril but that flow mixes with the surrounding air. Anecdotal reviews all talk about how they can smell the surrounding air, meaning that particles get into your nose and then lungs. I saw a review by a doctor discussing about how having a constant flow of air pointed at the nose will dry the nasal mucosa which would offset any advantages from the flow of mixed fileted/non-filtered air.

Not that I think it's a good product by any means, but you'd be expected to smell the surrounding air as odors are too small.
