These are all correct, but as an individual you’re pretty much limited to writing to your representative. You can’t opt out in any immediate sense.

See my nearby comment on Direct Primary Care. It is possible to partially opt out of the system, and fortunately it is the part of the system that you touch most often (or should be anyway).

I'm all for it, but honestly smells very much like communism for my ear.

Lol. You'll get better results if you stop smelling with your ears

We already have communism in the United States.

Our Party Congress is filled with self-indulgent and self-interested megalomaniacs of industry — who meet irregularly at the latest party meetings in [Davos|Geneva|Etc.].

Their politburo is congress. The secretariat are the numerous and uncountable alphabet orgs. And our General Secretary is the President. Somewhere else within every state are the parktoms — but those are not of any note.

On the topic of healthcare: whereas communism usually provides socialist healthcare for all. Our brand of MBA-grade communism has optimized away this inefficiency. In its place, citizens of the party must work and fulfill the party’s goals if they wish to receive any medicine or treatment for maladies. Yes, all men are created equal, but some are more equal than others. These paragons of virtue and industry are model citizens. These are the blood and bone of our great motherland. For their service to the party, they receive medicine, amenable housing, nourishing food, and other such luxuries.

Comrade, is this not wonderful? Our duty to the party is always rewarded. Our sacrifice for the betterment of all. But those who will not work to bring about our collective goals will not receive any of the party’s gifts. They are traitors and most likely — Adam Smith forgive me — capitalists!

> pharmaceutical companies

But it’s hospitals/labs which are as bad or much worse in this regard. “Greedy” pharmaceutical companies are just a boogeyman, insurance companies, hospital admin and doctors are just fine with charging “random”/arbitrary fees based on clients perceived ability to pay and not in anyway related to actual costs.

It’s both. Pharmaceuticals companies are not an innocent bystander. Everyone is happy to get this big piece of the pie, including drug companies.

Of course not. It just seems that they might actually be the most transparent segment of this entire system which makes more visible.

And well… from the society’s perspective high/very-high prices for new drugs for a decade or so (20 years seems too long though) might be a good deal if it results in very high investment into R&D.
