At the risk of sounding cruel, this is the consequence of Europe *choosing* to fight the war through Ukraine. The history of humanity is littered with wars, and this one is no different.

The west could have simply let Ukraine be invaded without resistance and enjoyed a cozy winter. Afterall, that's how they've reacted to foreign coups, invasions and wars since WW2. In some, they have been the aggressors themselves. Their assistance towards Ukraine is hardly egalitarian. It's good old cut-throat geopolitics.

Ofc, I empathize with Ukrainians watching their country be the latest on the chopping board of global games of chess. I would never wish that fate on anyone. But no European is a "victim of Russia's invasion". They are willing participants in a proxy war that benefits their long term national security goals. If anything, countries are relishing in being able to fight a war with Russia without putting a single body on the front lines.

Not even Europe, more a bunch of elites like the European Commission and governments. The Europeans who have been impacted most by Europe joining the war are the same who didn't have any choice in it, specifically the poorest that can't afford to keep up with energy prices in order to keep their house warm.

At the same time the elites who filled their mouths with words like "sacrifice" are those who didn't have to change their lifestyle in the slightest.

It reminds of the tightest COVID lockdowns, rich people would post videos from their mansions/villas telling people who lived cramped in flats to stay home and be responsible.

The biggest injustice in the world is that people like you don't wind up as a part of the "necessary sacrifices" they have no trouble advocating for.

So HN's policy is that it's fine to discuss which groups of people we should let be raped and murdered, but suggesting that those advocating such a policy are doing so from the privilege of never being the victims is a "personal attack"?

Just to make sure I've got that right?

Ukraine probably wouldn’t have been invaded at all without western backing, would it? It is a lot like the Poland situation in WWII. They still would have lost land since they have a weak negotiating position, but the west staying out would have saved many lives (now thrown into a meat grinder for some lines in the dirt).
