I wonder how many web devs manage to keep the complexity of these server-client interactions straight in their heads and how fun it is to troubleshoot this Rube Goldberg machinery when stuff goes wrong.

I'm looking long and hard to see if Next.js is still a good fit with this new direction. The VC's want their money and the push to host will Vercel is getting louder with every new version.
