Maybe I'm cynical and have low status friends but when I look around only a minority pursue hobbies with any great dedication or consistency. People pursue careers to project status. When success no longer depends on merit it will devolve to proxies like nepotism, scheming, intrigue etc. We see how such utopias play out in regimes like Soviet Union or North Korea. Your only assets in such places are who you know and even that is very temporary as allegiances are reshuffled with some regularity and woe is you if you bet your fortunes on the wrong one.
The problem is that pursuits you mentioned are 'winner take all' examples. Who knows the name of the 29th best chess player in the world? Probably not very many. And that's still a very formidable bar to cross for most humans on earth.
So then, what does a laid off business analyst who built and edited spreadsheets most of their life are to do now? Pick up athletics in hopes of making it at the seniors' olympiad? Shake their ass on TikTok in hopes of becoming a 55 year old "influencer"?
And just like book clubs of today it will be attended by a tiny minority.
But in the absence of any human driven task that meaningfully improves well being the way to signal status will likely devolve into some form of fighting. The display of status might be narrowed to demonstrating who can kill more. Either literally kill or at best partake in some arbitrarily conceived games or intrigues designed (by AI?) to flag status.
Not sure if they ever had it in modern history.
My OS (Arch), my browser (Firefox) and my hardware (Yubikey) all work fine with some sites. For example my Google account credentials are on my Yubikey passkey. But half of the sites that claim to support passkeys won't offer me the option to save the passkey on my hardware. Paypal is one such example. Facebook is another. I don't understand why. They seemingly only want to cooperate with cloud based passkey storage. I don't know what mechanics govern this.
What I'd like to understand is why the majority of sites that allegedly supoprt passkeys do not let me store them on Yubikey hardware but instead are pushing into "cloud" passkeys. That's what is triggering my spidey sense about the whole scheme. If they are so great all around and vendor neutral why is everyone pushing me to store my keys in some "cloud" password manager I have no intention to use otherwise. Or worse use my phone as a device to store my passkeys.
Does it thrash the session's KV cache?
Yes, that was the case for me. I resolved to get a PHEV "because road trips" and after test driving a bunch I went ahead and got a pure EV.
Fossil cars are cooked and even Toyota is implicitly agreeing.
BYD makes cars that can charge in about 10 minutes and honestly deliver 500km+ of range. Every advantage that combustion based cars used to have has dissipated by now.
That was the case for me. We had one EV and one fossil fuel car for road trips. After driving the EV day to day it was so painful to use the other car that we decided to replace it with a second EV. A longer stop to recharge on a road trip once or twice a year is a small price to pay for the benefits of EV driving day to day.
The word "cases" is already plural. Why does it need an article in front of it? It's one of the usages that trip me up. Why isn't it just "all cases"?
Here I have no idea why in the last sentence you wrote "all the cases" even though cases is already plural. This is not covered by any of the rules people have been posting in this thread. I'm the GP who started the article usage discussion here.
What gets me as a non-native speaker far more than "a vs an" is the "a vs the" conundrum. I still don't quite get when something needs to be "indefinite" and I've been speaking English for close to forty years. My native tongue lacks articles altogether and it's soo bloody hard I feel hopeless I'll ever master them fully.
> writing the laws becomes a bigger problem than writing the code itself.
Of course because at its limit programming is basically defining desired behaviour under all circumstances and logical conditions.
I'm not following the local mdoel scene too closely but this seems quite amazing. Is this able to be run on Apple silicon too?
The UK wanted it the opposite way. They wanted full access to the EU market but forbid the movement of people because they wanted to get rid of the Poles. The EU would never agree to that and rightly so.
I'd not hang out near windows in tall buildings if I were him.
Meh, it is the sacred text of Scientology. Mostly pseudo scientific made up bullshit, wrapped in the buzzwords of the day and conveying little actual information. Just like opus 5.
This sounds like a Dianetics chapter by L Ron Hubbard.
Yes, propaganda is increasingly not about what you say on a topic but what topics are being talked about.
Decades of loose policy around financial regulation and ZIRP made living unaffordable for most western citizens but politicians rediscovered the eternal scapegoat in the shape of immigrants. This way they don't have to answer for their failures. They just made one up.
It's tragic how gullible the public is. This scam worked in Britain, USA and is likely going to work in Germany, Poland etc if the polls are to be believed.
So with #2 they are betting that the future models will be able to reign in the mess that the current generation leaves in its wake. It's a bold bet but not an outrageous one either.
I need something basic to keep track of swimming pool laps. Is there a simple fitbit that can do it reliably and holds a charge for at least a couple of weeks?
Probably wrong proportions of the sourkraut and fresh cabbage. Good bigos is truly great.
is there a xitter free version of the video?
No, it's been consistently like that. I sampled their episodes over a number of years and the theme was the same. It was sad to see Dvorak gradually adopt the same views after a while. At first he would attempt some mild pushback but later he embraced that nonsense full steam. You truly become the average of the people you most surround yourself with.
I'm going to post something that contradicts this outpouring of fondness for the late Dvorak. While I did enjoy his friendly curmudgeon act in the days of TWiT, I was very dismayed by him jumping in bed with that paranoid crackpot and I blame him for a lot of toxic ideas that he helped spread in his No Agenda show years. Maybe his earlier act was the mask and the latter John C Dvorak was the real persona. Or maybe the other way around. I'll never know. But I can't celebrate his life because of what he decided to do with it in his latter years.
