Re:No, the money you spend on lotteries doesn’t go to the park by fshbbdssbbgdd on Thursday May 04, 2023 @02:47AM (#35812059)
If you find yourself stressed by the process of reserving campsites online, I’d encourage you to just go to random public land and camp there. It’s legal by default to camp on BLM and Forest Service land and you do not need permission from Booz Allen Hamilton to do it. There are endless adventures to be had and plenty of room for everyone. People competing to fill out online forms so they can be allocated appointments to enjoy specific small segments of the great outdoors is a truly bizarre phenomenon. If you enjoy participating in that system, more power to you, but if you don’t, then just go anywhere in the much larger portion of public land that isn’t administered in that fashion.

Yes, but please, please, please leave no trace (LNT).

It is not really bizarre that people really want to go to the places that have e.g built toilets.

Not everyone wants to pee squatting in the bushes, or not have access to running water or electricity

Why not? That's what camping is.

What you're describing isn't just "this is public land. Enjoy"

The northeast is a great example of this principal.

Eg in NH If you go to Fraconia or Cathedral, everything is over-crowded and you can't do anything without navigating crowds. But 20 minutes down the road for either of those places are endless chosspiles accessed via empty trailhead parking lots that you can car camp in without issues for almost the entire year (assuming you have good tires or chains). NY is even more extreme with the gunks and the daks; you can easily spend an entire season living in the daks without issues and this is especially true if you don't need to worry about where to park a car. But good luck doing so much as taking a nap without harrasment at the gunks.

If helps if you are the type of person that prefers solitude on a chosspile over interstate traffic on half dome, and is okay with a 10-20 mile hike through uninspiring and uncomfortable terrain.
