A lot of this has to do with the fact that Judaism is effectively the descendant of several Bronze age pagan cults, and around the entire world pagan gods were intertwined with ethnic group and city-state identity. Once the Axial age shift towards universalism happened, the West (and Christianity) developed under universalist assumptions and doesn't quite know how to deal with...well, like I said, the descendant of Bronze age city-state cults.
