Bitcoin's power consumption isn't a "tradeoff". It's just as centralized as proof of stake systems.
Bitcoin's power consumption is just appealing to the religious aspect of the network : if we changed it, it would go against the original design. Even though it burns 1% of world energy consumption for that stupidity.
