There is a big difference between working AT a startup (an employee) and working ON a startup (a founder), IMO. Any chance we can get an update to reflect that?

Anyways, I chose 'Working at a startup', though I'd like to someday work ON a startup (as well as become a student again and finish school).

At first I thought "Wow. Am I the only one so far to be working on a startup as a founder?"

But then I discovered that this option was just added. Heh.

See, I just put down "Unemployed" for that situation. ;-)

Working, moonlighting on my own project

Yep, same here. Been doing that for about 3 years now.

I explain it as Bruce Wayne vs Batman. When people ask me what I do, it comes down to "...but at night, my real work begins!"

Unemployed, Freelance, Hacking, and on a break from being a Student.

Don't do much work freelancing, just enough to pay for my essentials, and mainly spend my time hacking and working on my own small projects. My plans are to finish school next year, but that could change — we will see what the next year throws at me. :)

Working (as an employee) at a company that was a startup in 2004. Selected "... but not at a startup" because it's pretty hard to call > 1000 employees and billions in investment a startup anymore :)

Doing consulting and freelance work but leaving that all behind next month to pursue my startup full-time. Crazy times ahead ;-)

Employee working at a startup. I've previously founded two startups and I do agree that being an employee is quite different.

You forgot retired. I guess I'll have to use unemployed and working at a startup as a founder (they're both somewhat true).

Working at a startup, but I prefer to brag that I am unemployed+living in my parents basement.

Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by emmett on Friday October 24, 2008 @06:54PM (#343071)
That would be "not at a startup", I think.
Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by a-priori on Friday October 24, 2008 @08:39PM (#343176)
Full-time school + part-time work (not at a startup)
Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by greaterscope on Friday October 24, 2008 @05:38PM (#343002)
in my case, the timeline for "leaving to work on a startup soon" is hopefully within 6 months. or maybe i should just take out a loan?
Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by lsc on Friday October 24, 2008 @08:23PM (#343169)
professional?

professionals wear suits.

I'm running a company, but I still work days as a contractor to pay for it.

Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by BFalkner on Saturday October 25, 2008 @01:52AM (#343390)
The best professionals I know don't wear suits.
Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by lsc on Saturday October 25, 2008 @11:15PM (#344014)
please, then, define what 'professional' means.
Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by BFalkner on Sunday November 02, 2008 @01:15AM (#351227)
Sorry, I didn't notice your reply until just now.. I'd say something along the lines of "Someone who pursues payment for something."

Maybe there should be another poll: 'What is your startup experience?' Work at one, have worked at one, Will start one soon, will start one in the distant future.....
Re:Poll: What is your professional status? by BigZaphod on Friday October 24, 2008 @06:33PM (#343049)
