Appreciate your feedback! I can totally see how you would read it that way. Maybe "servers should be farmed, not gardened" would be less ambiguous. Server farms have been a thing for a long time after all.

Thank-you for the suggestion of vegetables. It makes sense to me as a native speaker. If I had to clarify with folks, I'd open with the idea of server "farms" (Microsoft IIS) and then talk about "gardens" as custom setups.
