That's another myth that always iritated me: IPv4 addresses cannot be memorised. I have a few memorised, mainly some TLDs and Internic. With those I can "bootstrap" using DNS/FTP to get any other address. IPv4 are no more difficult to remember than phone numbers. Maybe people are not memorising phone numbers anymore because of mobile phone contacts storage but it does mean we are incapable of doing so.
Thank you for stating the truth.
Literally nobody thinks its impossible to memorize 4 8-bit numbers. A bad user experience, sure.

Pretty sure that's true of 90% of everyone here, since all you really need to memorize is a public dns resolver, and 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1 .1 is a particularly easy address to remember.

1.1 is even easier to type!
For IPv6, you can ping 2600::
I love that you are this passionate about static IP addresses. Static IPv4 addresses, to be precise. Illegitimi non carborundum!

I'll save someone else the search.

That's from a decade ago!! You must have some super secret admin search because the Algolia HN search barfs on the phrase for some reason.
It just stuck in my memory randomly from back then.
Dan is passionate about HN item IDs the way the rest of us are passionate about IPv4 addresses.

Agree, HN’s search returned nothing, possibly because the terms are not English, but no idea.
Try Google too next time if HN’s search doesn’t find what you’re looking for:
https://www.google.com/search?q=site:news.ycombinator.com+Il...
It's also not a HN specific phrase....

"Don't let the bastards grind you down."
bawolff is gonna keep trying.
I really do like static IPv4 addresses. I wish I owned one.
You're welcome. :)
FWIW, I still memorize phone numbers too! I also avoid phone calls like the plague, so in reality it's just a handful of numbers per year.
Deeply deeply agree with you. Not whoever was arguing. :) My "dialup" VM in the cloud I use for assorted things has had the same IP for at least 7 years, probably longer. (Thanks Linode!) After a few years, it's honestly not that hard to remember an arbitrary 32bit int. :)
