Asahi Linux will never work as well as a normal Linux machine within any sort of reasonable time frame. Even with Intel CPUs the Linux experience on Macs is kinda shit.
If your goal is to have a Linux workstation then buying a Mac is pretty dumb.

There's open, closed, and then there's the crap Apple pull off. None of their devices are even slightly serviceable or upgradeable. RAM, disk, battery are all, physically or otherwise, fixed for the whole life of the machine. Add the huge premiums they charge for going from 8GB RAM to 16, or similar in storage, makes the sacrifice much more bearable.
It runs, without full GPU support (at the moment no 3d acceleration at all If I am not mistaken), and you have to use Asahi Linux, not your favorite distro (yet). Also many of us doesn't want to give our money to Apple.

I bet the trackpad is awful compared to a MacBook, although I have no idea how it feels under Asahi. I reached the same conclusion... These m1 macs are just too good at the price point, nothing else can meaningfully compete. Once Asahi works well I'm going to have to get one.
The StarBook claims 10 and probably achieves less (everyone does).
The base specs are roughly comparable, except i3 vs M1 and the high resolution screen on the Mac.
The site is quoting me $883 vs $999.
Even ignoring the CPU difference, the battery life alone is probably worth the $100, let alone the display.
I understand the value some place on its openness, but it’s not even a medium sacrifice. It’s pretty big.
