except that these things aren't research material anymore and are now taught at undergraduate level.

That's the point. No one is solving the problem, they're regurgitating knowledge.

If you care is someone has completed a Computer Science degree, ask to see their resume. If you care if they actually learned the material, ask to see their GPA.
