Never happen.

1) No woman would believe you if you said you were on it (remember we are talking about initial stages of attraction here) 2) Society has ingrained prejudices against men dosing themselves with synthetic hormones in support of lifestyle choices

You know, there are men who want it for their own reasons and wouldn't give a shit if a woman believed you or not. It's so they don't have to worry if the women screws up and the girl gets pregnant by mistake, hooking them up for child support payments for 20 years. Their girl might not agree with chemical contraception, making it better if they got it themselves.

Also there is research into non-hormonal contraception for men.

My girlfriend would be delighted if there were a male contraceptive pill. She is barely over 100 pounds and is very sensitive to medication across the board. (Just one cup of coffee in the afternoon is enough to give her insomnia.)

We went through 4 different contraceptive pills, each switch taking over a month. They had obnoxious side effects: made her feel irritable, cut her sex drive down to nothing, made her feel not attracted to me, and made her feel like she "wasn't herself." It was horrible and it did test our relationship. The pill is not really an option for her, and I wish I had an option other than a vasecctomy.

(We currently use condom & foam, which ruins a lot of the spontaneity, and which isn't quite effective enough for her tastes.)

I went through this for a year, and apparently a lot of our married friends have too. I think that this particular side-effect of the pill is more common than drug companies would like to admit. Worse, I think it's been attributed to female nature instead of recognized as a side effect of this far-too-common drug.

I think they not only ignore this, I think they knowingly make pills with worse emotional/affective side effects simply because they can be made cheaper. "Monophasic" birth control pills? That just means all the pills are the same except for the placebos.

made her feel irritable is an understatement for many women.

Sir, may I suggest you better explain your comment a little bit better? It'd be a shame to come across like a sexist soundbite.

I know two women that didn't want to take the pill because they said it made them psycho. Don't shoot the messenger!

......you didn't leave an email =)

there's also other non-oral options such as the Evra patch. Because it's through the skin the hormonal dosage is a bit lower than the pill. Other options include the Nueva ring and a three-month per shot injection thing, altho that improves her chances of getting osteoporosis.

I am very suspicious of any hormonal birth control for my girlfriend. Her 2X or more enhanced sensitivity to everything is really uncanny in how consistent it is. At first I thought she was making things up or overreacting. She's not. I can't see any hormonal birth control avoiding the side effects unless it was specifically designed for her. I hear that this is coming down the pike, however. If you could do this in a cost effective way, you'd make billions.

Yeah unfortunately there's not a lot of other options other than the chemical approach. But I vaguely remember reading from somewhere that transdermal methods (like the patch) and injection methods has more direct access to the bloodstream without having to go through the digestive tract, and hence can be administered in lower dosage than oral methods. IANADoctor, obviously.

The thing is that estrogen/testosterone regulate a lot of different subsystems. Avoiding "side effects" may not be even possible using the technique of manipulating sex hormones. There are two potentially huge markets here, birth control and bodybuilding. The bodybuilders would, if they could, abandon conventional steroids altogether and go for HGH because they've realized that the side effects are just inevitable. A side-effect free Pill is going to need some science which isn't available yet.
