I don't know how this ever became an issue of "free speech" in the first place. This isn't a matter of free speech and never has been.

If you call up Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern in the middle of afternoon drive hour and he doesn't like what you have to say, he's going to hang up the phone on you (assuming you could get through in the first place). This is no different - google has absolutely no obligation to host your garbage on their site.

If you want to post conspiracy theories, go buy a server from dell, pay for a business line from your ISP, and setup your own site, and host your own content. If the content you're hosting violates laws, it'll probably get taken down.

You're free to say whatever you want, nobody else is REQUIRED to listen to you, host you, or advertise you and never has been. About the only way out of that box is if you can prove they were discriminating against you because you were a member of a protected class (in the US) and not because of the content of your data.

Free speech is a meaningless freedom if there are effectively zero public fora in which you can exercise it.

"I said some garbage on Rush Limbaugh's show, so he hung up on me"

"So then I put it on Facebook, but Facebook censored it"

"So then I put it on Youtube, but Google censored it"

"So then I self hosted, but then Cloudflare censored it"

"So then I hosted it out of my own house, but then Comcast blocked it"

"Oh well, I'm not in jail so that means I still have free speech I guess"

I would say the above are signs of a decaying democracy.

Youtube and facebook refusing to host something is not a slippery slope to something being completely censored. Anyone can rent a server in pretty much any country. Saying the biggest companies in the world not hosting you is the same as being completely censored is like saying you will die of thirst if you aren't allowed to drink coke.

I will die of thirst though if every source of water has a megacorp in the supply chain that can cut me off from it.

Imagine a world where your tap water is ultimately sourced from Dasani. And imagine Dasani can cut off my water if I say bad things they don't like. That is the world we live in: s/tap water/information/g, s/Dasani/tech megacorps/g

To reach a significant audience on the internet, you must go through a tech megacorp at some layer in the stack. And that tech megacorp can decide to cut you off from the internet at their layer in the stack if they don't like what you are saying or if Twitter mobs put pressure on them to do so.

Internet service providers should be common carriers. If they were, your whole argument falls apart. And that is what we should be fighting for. It would be the easiest to do, with the least odds of bad side effects.

No it isn't. Again, you can rent a VPS for under $10 in almost any country in the world.

> To reach a significant audience on the internet

This is not necessarily true, but it isn't really the point. You can put stuff up and people can access it.

You are not entitled to maximum easy discovery. You are not entitled to be advertised and promoted to a significant audience. The internet is a pull medium not push. If people want to hear what you have to say they can.
