>These are both signs of a maturing market. It's a good thing that DCFC operators like Ionna, Walmart, etc. are still charging ahead at a pretty rapid pace, even without federal funding. Ionna especially has been deploying at a crazy speed.

But the market isn't mature. It COULD be the sign of a maturing market, or it COULD be the sign of politicians that take large sums of money from oil companies gaining power and gutting subsidies.

>Again, not true. Some investments like battery manufacturing, sure, but that's not what they were ever good at. GM has a pretty robust line of EVs, and Ford has bet big on their new platform underpinning on their new 'affordable' truck.

Ford has GREATLY reduced their EV plans. How's that EV Explorer coming along? Right, scrapped. The F-150 is scrapped, the maverick-esque platform will likely find a lukewarm response followed by further contractsion. It will be double the price of a slate, and nowhere near as nice as the Rivian.

The Cadillac Escalade IQ is… a Cadillac Escalade with an electric powertrane. It is as nice as any of the brands mentioned.

The Lucid gravity is in the same discussion.

Lexus is releasing the TZ which is the equivalent to the TX gasser.

Spoken from a place of true entitlement. Voting is a luxury some of the poorest can't afford, and the republicans have made sure to make it even more difficult now that the supreme court gutted the civil rights act.

I'm guessing you'd have a different opinion if you personally had to wait in line for HOURS because the Rs in your district closed down voting stations specifically to make it nearly impossible to actually vote in precincts that are predominantly liberal or people of color. And it has only gotten worse and more widespread since 2020.

Source? I recall major platforms suspending accounts that were literally posting nazi propaganda in violation of platform rules. I don’t recall a single instance of meta suspending the page of an otherwise rule-abiding Republican candidate’s account in the middle of a rally.
You honestly think meta couldn’t setup an automated system to target democratic candidate’s accounts and mess with them during a scheduled rally or live stream? As if zuck has to personally do anything to make that happen? This is hardly tinfoil hat territory, it would be trivial to put in place, and until I see it is coincidentally happening to their R counterparts, it tracks with Zuck’s current political leanings.
You don’t have very good imagination then. Cisco code is such a mess that there’s basically 0 chance he can even make a harness in 24 months, much less rewrite production code.
I highly doubt apologizing would’ve had any effect on the outcome. He never had any intention of changing the direction of the company.
Ignoring how ugly they are, its ultimate mistake was Elon blatantly lying about final specs when he started taking pre-orders. The starting price was going to be under $40k, and the highest end model was going to be under $70k with 520 miles of range.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/21/tesla-cybertruck-unveiled.ht...

What they released cost just under $100k with 320 miles of range (which means actually like 260-270 when you don’t use Tesla’s inflated number).

At 520 miles of range you can actually consider towing a boat to a cabin without having to stop. Heck maybe even get back home. At 320 it’s just a non starter to use it to tow anything that isn’t just around town.

I know the HN crowd like to joke that people just buy trucks to commute, but most folks that own one want to at least have the option to tow something without having to constantly deal with range anxiety.

If corporations are people, then they should face the exact same punishment as a person. If any individual perpetrated this level of fraud they might be spending the rest of their life in jail. See: bernie madhoff.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:24PM (#50127624)
Both versions have giant nitrogen tanks that expel gas. Neither has combustion. I won’t say it’s not novel, I will say that there’s 0 chance it’s street legal with the vertical thrusters, little chance it’s legal with the rear thrusters, and given that it takes 6 hours to fill the tank for a single use that is good for 1/3rd of a quarter mile, almost useless.

It made for a great marketing stunt, it is absolutely useless for a production car. And you can tell the designers realize it but were at the whims of Elon in their interview.

https://youtu.be/JdkIOhFmbKI

We were promised an awd, 620 mile range monster almost a decade ago, and then again 6 years ago. We were delivered a “maybe 310 mile” range, rwd doorstop.

I’m not sure who this car is for, but it’s definitely not car guys. It is the cybertruck of sports cars, and that’s not a good thing…

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @03:39PM (#50010953)
OK, now do Oracle to prove you actually care about the issue and aren’t just manipulating the stock market and helping your friends in competing businesses.
I hate to break it to you, healthcare in the US is extremely patchy and location dependent.

I can also tell you working in tech for a very long time, if you aren’t working for a Silicon Valley company you might have health insurance options, but that doesn’t mean they’re any good. Especially if you have a preexisting condition.

Based on what data? A quick google search says the average automation engineer in Germany makes 90k euro to $107k in the US.

And the German has universal healthcare, clocks out at 5 and can’t be bothered, and gets real vacation time.

Re:Big Tech ruined the cloud, so we're renaming ours on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:29PM (#49935427)
But you don’t have to pay for it. It’s an optional service that provides a secure internet facing link to your HA instance.

You’re more than welcome to host your own or use a vpn or stick it behind cloudflare.

Cloud does mean something in home automation, and that meaning is generally: you must pay a monthly subscription or the product is degraded or doesn't work at all (looking at you wink). This isn’t that.

Re:Big Tech ruined the cloud, so we're renaming ours on Friday October 02, 2026 @11:44AM (#49934805)
You’re missing the point entirely. Some other home automation platforms require a cloud/subscription to function at all. It has nothing to do with running on AWS or Azure or insert hyperscaler.

Link is completely optional and does not affect the functionality of home assistant. You can run completely offline without a subscription of any kind on your own hardware if you so choose.

I’m guessing the indiscriminate bombings of schools in Iran and Palestine are probably playing a role in his opinion.
Re:September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @10:26AM (#49909480)
So are we getting there by exhausting the strategic reserve, by killing renewable projects, or by eliminating fuel efficiency standards?

I’m hoping they don’t grow up in one the US shapes if it continues to be run by a dictator loving sexual predator who thinks corruption isn’t just ok, but a mandatory part of government.

It’s also rich saying that the US doesn’t negotiate with terrorists while watching Trump verbally fellate Putin at every given opportunity.

Because they’ll be able to just fire all their employees and redirect the spend to AI. That’s the current delusion.
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Monday September 28, 2026 @03:59PM (#49883530)
Ahh yes - AI companies do indeed want it both ways. They want to be your single source for authoritative information about every subject on earth, but also want you to know everything they tell you could possibly be wrong so they can't be held accountable for results.

Can you imagine in the 1980s the Encyclopedia Brittanica salesman trying to sell you 5 figures worth of factual knowledge, only to tell you as you're writing him a check that: oh by the way we don't actually stand behind any of the information in these books, you'll need to verify any claims yourself.

And I’d argue if you’re saying we need to take complete end to end costs into account, oil isn’t profitable either.

If oil companies are ever on the hook for climate change, the bill will be measured in trillions.

Re:Fertility rate dropped over 50% within 10 years in Argentina on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @07:52PM (#49824313)
It is only a “devastating effect” if your only measure of success is unsustainable capitalistic growth.

If you measure it in terms of sustainable human life on earth, it was rather effective

Have they ever even attempted to claim it’s only for good? I think at best they’ve gone with the: you need to give up a little privacy to catch the bad guys.

Followed up with a lot of “we just make the tool, we can’t be held responsible for how it’s used”.

Re:Global Shortage Has Led to Motor Oil Rationing at Costco on Sunday September 13, 2026 @05:26PM (#49688879)
I would imagine if there is oil in the electric motors that is “lifetime” but test really probably 300k miles, so if you drive the car into the ground, you probably would want to service that at some point, assuming they are serviceable without destruction.
TBH the president should primarily be relying on trusted, competent advisors that they’ve surrounded themselves with. They can’t possibly be experts in enough areas to make unilateral decisions.

Which is probably why Biden didn’t attack Iran.

> you would hope OpenAI has very good tools for this, but a full data trail of all inputs is difficult to trace through.

They have a financial incentive not to track any of this, so why would they?

OpenAI’s entire business model is predicated on stealing other people’s work and selling it to the masses.

I won’t claim the A/B test is a good one, but I can say I canceled my blazer EV reservation when they announced it wouldn’t support carplay or android auto.
Re:Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread on Friday September 04, 2026 @11:07PM (#49572720)
The question isn’t whether prisoners work in other countries which I’m confident you know and dodged.

The question is whether the prisons in Brazil are private, and are allowed to sell prison labor FOR A PROFIT, incentivizing both greater incarceration rates, and disincentivizing release.

The answer is no, I’m not aware of ANY other country that allows a private organization to profit off the labor if people imprisoned by the state. At least not any country we would consider 1st world.

It’s absolutely absurd to suggest the current situation is beneficial to anyone but the ruling class and anyone claiming otherwise has never been to prison, never had a relative or friend who has been to prison, or is literally a psychopath who lacks basic human empathy.

Re:Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread on Friday September 04, 2026 @10:30PM (#49572528)
And does Brazil have their own 13th amendment that allows them to use prison labor as their modern slave workforce?
Re:Mamdani Bans AI in NYC Schools on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @07:01PM (#49543774)
Good? The amount of just flat out wrong information the average LLM spits out makes it unfit for education IMO. I can’t imagine asking teachers to have to personally vet every single lesson plan to ensure an AI wasn’t hallucinating when producing the content.
