I think I'm blind now...

(Sorry to be snarky, but my god man, change that color scheme...)

Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @07:19AM (#2476650)
Thanks for the feedback. Glad I'm not a designer :) Will update it soon.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:28PM (#2477356)
I toned down the colors. I think the background image is still a little busy. Will change that soon.
Re:Githits by jrockway on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:49AM (#2476457)
Nice, I have the most repositories of anyone in Chicago, and am only 6 positions less popular than dhh.

I am not sure what this means, but I'm OK with it.

Nice. For anyone interested, here's how to do location-based user searching in github: https://github.com/search?type=Users&language=&q=loc...
Re:Githits by icco on Saturday April 23, 2011 @11:43AM (#2476996)
Question: How are you picking the cities? Is it just cities that you know of, or are they the top github using cities, or arbitrary?
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @01:36PM (#2477193)
Arbitrary + github cities with sufficient data. I have a lot more cities that I'm not showing because there isn't enough data.
Re:Githits by nkassis on Saturday April 23, 2011 @04:17PM (#2477503)
Could you possibly add Montreal Canada? :)
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @11:58PM (#2478236)
Montreal is up now.
Re:Githits by nkassis on Sunday April 24, 2011 @01:19AM (#2478335)
Thank you
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @04:31PM (#2477525)
No problem. Will be ready for next week.
Re:Githits by cincinnatus on Saturday April 23, 2011 @10:06PM (#2478110)
Would be nice to have state level data too, this would help regions that dont have any hot cities.
Re:Githits by damncabbage on Saturday April 23, 2011 @04:25AM (#2476499)
Kindly requesting Australia. :)

(Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide... Take your pick.)

Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @07:27AM (#2476664)
Sounds good, added to my list. If anyone else interested in a particular city, just let me know.
Re:Githits by delano on Saturday April 23, 2011 @11:06AM (#2476926)
Montreal, please.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @01:37PM (#2477195)
I already have Montreal as of last week. Will put it up soon.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @11:58PM (#2478237)
Up now.
Re:Githits by nantes on Saturday April 23, 2011 @10:40PM (#2478160)
Kansas City?
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @11:57PM (#2478235)
yes, coming next week.
Re:Githits by zheng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @02:49AM (#2476407)
Any particular reason the main site defaults to Philly? Also, what is the utility of grouping users by physical location? Novelty?
Re:Githits by icefox on Saturday April 23, 2011 @02:51AM (#2476409)
It would be cool to have an input of my account and have it spit out users that live near me that have contributed to projects I own or contributed to projects I also have contributed to or am watching. It would be fun to meet up with some devs in person. Really taking the 'social' context of coding to the next level.
Re:Githits by patrickyeon on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:07AM (#2476429)
Looking to hire a local programmer would be one use.
Re:Githits by zheng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @11:51AM (#2477016)
Ah, this makes sense. However I'd echo the question above about how the cities were chosen.
Re:Githits by RK on Saturday April 23, 2011 @05:33AM (#2476570)
Seems that the majority of people I follow do not list their location, so view these lists with that in mind.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @07:23AM (#2476660)
That is correct. I actually like this because it allows people to opt-out. If they want to be shown, they will have to set their location correctly :)
Re:Githits by kingkilr on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:25AM (#2476441)
It'll never stop being weird to pull up something like this and see myself :/
Re:Githits by icefox on Saturday April 23, 2011 @02:48AM (#2476405)
It would be nice if I could click on a state on not just pre-selected towns or could put in the url such as my town WalthamMA and show those in Waltham MA (two towns over from cambridge).
Re:Githits by postfuturist on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:02AM (#2476421)
Portland is part of Washington? No.
Re:Githits by vitobotta on Saturday April 23, 2011 @05:01AM (#2476531)
Cool, it's also a nice way to discover repos and projects
Re:Githits by adulau on Saturday April 23, 2011 @05:09AM (#2476540)
Nice idea and implementation. I would love to see Europe and all the countries in the EU. By the way, is the software for Githits on GitHub?
Re:Githits by drdaeman on Saturday April 23, 2011 @05:18AM (#2476553)
Would love to see the ability to type in any city/country and see the stats.
Re:Githits by catshirt on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:57AM (#2476464)

Re:Githits by mcantelon on Saturday April 23, 2011 @05:30AM (#2476568)
Vancouver includes Vancouver, WA and Vancouver, Canada. Otherwise nice little mashup.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @07:20AM (#2476653)
Thanks, and good catch, this is being updated right now including historical data.
Re:Githits by s-phi-nl on Saturday April 23, 2011 @04:47PM (#2477564)
I am a little curious how you detect where I am. For me it shows "Philadelphia", which is indeed the city nearest my hometown, but I am currently at my college in Minnesota, so my IP address would show that I am there.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @04:54PM (#2477579)
I don't. It defaults to Philly because that's where I'm from and I didn't have time to add a landing page before someone submitted this.
Re:Githits by jashkenas on Saturday April 23, 2011 @08:38AM (#2476731)
Looks like it doesn't pick up repos owned by organizations that have their location listed. That would be nice.
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @08:49AM (#2476743)
it should, if I'm understanding you correctly. which org and repo are you looking at?
Re:Githits by jashkenas on Saturday April 23, 2011 @08:50AM (#2476745)
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @08:58AM (#2476755)
for example, underscore is on the list: http://www.githits.me/NewYorkCity

Is that what you mean?

Re:Githits by jashkenas on Saturday April 23, 2011 @09:13AM (#2476766)
Oops. I entirely missed the "By Organizations" bit down the scroll. My apologies.
Re:Githits by reddittor on Saturday April 23, 2011 @08:57AM (#2476753)
I'm seeing documentcloud listed for new york?
Re:Githits by HedgeMage on Saturday April 23, 2011 @02:17PM (#2477249)
May we have Indianapolis, Indiana please? :)
Re:Githits by aaronfeng on Saturday April 23, 2011 @02:23PM (#2477259)
I already have most of Indianapolis, I will put it up soon.
Re:Githits by axx on Saturday April 23, 2011 @03:28AM (#2476442)
Damn, the color scheme looks terrible!
