I'm not saying communicating other ways is not possible, but the majority of people actually do care about "blue bubbles vs green bubbles".

I think that was true 5 years ago when SMS was still a thing.

The majority of people are comfortable with Facebook and WhatsApp now.

Also - caring about the colors of bubbles is very different from ‘unable to communicate with their friends’.
