If you don't have any post-recovery immunity, then how do you ever recover to begin with?

immunity prevents you from being infected, not from eliminating the virus. People who are cured of AIDS by eliminating HIV aren't then immune.

HIV is a bit of a special case to begin with, since it's attacking the very immune system that would try to kill it. But is anyone clearing the virus on their own? I thought it required extensive retroviral therapy, and even then it isn't actually cleared?

Admittedly, I don't really keep up on the status of HIV, maybe something has changed.

A very small number of people have natural immunity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innate_resistance_to_HIV

I am not sure if anybody gets infected, then clears the virus on their own.
