Same experience today with foobar2000. Faster than any webapp could ever be. And, by the way, to have a vast collection is still just as appealing.

Collections are still very appealing as Spotify doesn't have large enough catalog to cover my normal playlist, let alone my extended collection.
Foobar2000 is the bee's knees
It really whips teh llama's ass...
The v5.666 build (Dec 2013) works just fine even now. Never makes an Internet connection, blazingly fast.
I personally love the keyboard shortcuts for finding music, queuing it, pause, play, etc; Very intuitive.
5.8 beta is available for download on http://winamp.com/
Oh my...I thought it was dead ages ago. I don't really listen music too often nowadays, apart from an odd evening with YouTube, but I do miss the speeds Winamp used to operate on.Blazing fast, even on some crappy pentium PC with a little bit of RAM...

winamp played my files without glitches too, but made my PC barely usable with nearly 100% cpu load (AMD K5-133 / playing 128kbs stereo mp3-s).
On the other hand: mpg123 on Linux played the same files with less than 50% cpu load! ;)

Time to upgrade to that 300mhz proc
You could throw hundreds or thousands of tracks into your playlist and could scroll incredibly quickly through them, even on relatively slow PCs of the day. In an age before Spotify where to have vast collections was appealing, all my friends could scan each others' playlists and immediately start playing a song.
The speed of the software really did help discover new music. Scroll, double-click, scroll, double-click, scroll, double-click.
