i was under the impression that the high power/short wavelength for 5g would practically limit it mostly to cities

Exactly. I predict many areas will never see 5G. You need more transmitters to cover the same distance as 4G.

Many rural areas don’t even have 4G yet. These areas even less likely to get 5G anytime soon IMHO.
