Agreed. More often than not, it's just a layer of jargon that obscures the topic at hand rather than clarify it. Worse, I see a lot of folks using it to belittle and intimidate -- recently I met an instructor at a startup-focused programming school who put his (very novice) students through a lecture which began, "Is a burrito a monoid" and went down hill from there -- he was actually bragging about how lost his students were. And he told me about all this under the presumption that I didn't know category theory (easy mistake, I guess, I'm a woman after all) and my biggest regret is that I didn't ask him to explain Poincare duality to me. If only he knew that my paralysis was a result of biting my tongue at his pedagogical trashfire...
