I don't think it's so strange, it explains very effectively that driving a vehicle has very little to do with the optics and sensors because humans can drive with a crappy camera, limited fov, and two small super inaccurate mirrors.

It's all about the data processing and the breakthrough that will enable human-ish self-driving cars will be there and not in more accurate sensors.
