The original Hangouts is not yet retired but I thought that Google was clear as far back as the 2016 enterprise focus announcement that the future of Hangouts was as a business communication platform within G Suite and that consumer Hangouts is deprecated.

Which is stupid. They have no consumer messaging application that works across devices to migrate to. If they kill off Hangouts, it will cause a bigger backlash than killing off Reader did.
