"There’s usually no way to tell whether a given USB-C device requires Thunderbolt, either — you just need to plug it in and see if it works."

Or how about something called google? Who are these people plugging random devices into their computers that they know nothing about?

Most tech users... not every user is as tech savvy as your average HN reader and able to google these things, and that’s the issue.

The more technically competent you are - the more you want to be focused on your domain specialization - syadmin, cloud, development, devops, networking, PM etc.

Why would any professional wish to waste time learning the complex compatibility matrix of USB-C consumer cabling?

Exactly. Why should anyone? You should just be able to look at the cable and know what it does. Which as the article points out is not the current situation. The person I replied to stated that googling it is the answer but not everyone is that competent.

Don't even bother... if you're not designing for morons, you're not selling anything these days, apparently.

I wonder how these users interact with their stoves, or their washing machines.

Are those designed to detect if you put your hand on the stove, and automatically turn off, too? No.

Somehow humans can deal with basic issues, but not as soon as the word "computer" comes into it.
