I've literally wiped the whole drive, went back to Win 7 - everything was fine. Upgraded back to Win 10 and had all the same problems again.

Have you tried a fresh install of Windows 10, rather than an upgrade? (Once you've upgraded once, you should be able to install fresh as the Win 10 license is tied to the hardware.) Perhaps the problem is related to the upgrade process.

you can install win10 directly using your win7 license key if you've already upgraded. I would definitely try that.

It's what I did specifically because I've never trusted an OS upgrade. OS's are too complex for that to work reliably in my opinion.
