>>Same thing about the WW2 tank that's not working. A vehicle that doesn't work is still a vehicle.

Well no, it specifically says it's a memorial - at that point it's a statue, like an art installation, especially if the tank is non functional(bonus question - what if it was never an actual tank in the first place, it's just some metal bent to look like a tank?). If the memorial was of a Napoleonic soldier on a horse, you wouldn't say it violates a "no weapons allowed" rule just because the statue is holding a sword.

Re:No Vehicles in the Park on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @05:40AM (#50350296)
It's the classic "no parking after midnight" sign, which obviously means you can never park there.

How about point 4 - the litigiousness of American society leading to those high insurance costs, given that any accident on a playground can result in a multi million dollar payout?
Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:23PM (#50342210)
I've set up a new server literally couple weeks ago on a droplet on Digital Ocean - Ubuntu LTS is the default choice(you can select other distros but Ubuntu is the default). So I guess I picked Ubuntu because I haven't done Linux admin in over a decade and it's presented as the default choice by a big cloud provider.
And I really enjoyed Veilguard, I think the combat systems were just great and I loved taking on all the optional challenges towards the end. Some of the side character interactions were very good too - Lace and Emrich especially. But it doesn't change the fact that overal the game wasn't that good.
Yeah, maybe it's the idea that hospitals should make profit that should give?

Like, sorry, but not being from the US the whole idea of a "margin" when running a hospital is insane. Hospitals are paid from our ample taxes and the patient pays nothing - there is no room for profit there, not should there be one.

...I assume that's satire? I plug in our EV once a week at home, it takes like what, 5 seconds? Maybe 10 if I'm distracted. Another 5 seconds to unplug it the following morning.

Drive a 4 cylinder AMG and tell me if it "killed the joy" of anything. Incredible motors.
Re:When electric cars were for women on Sunday November 01, 2026 @04:28AM (#50323915)
>>I never got any excitement from driving an electric car, with the exception of the 0-60 of the powerful ones.

I've owned some really powerful cars in the past, and I swear I have never had as much fun as I did when I took our little Volkswagen e-Up to the Lake District for a week, yes it only has 80bhp but only a tonne of weight and instant torque - it was sooooo much fun on these narrow tight roads, you could really push it and just enjoy every second of it. I even drove the Hardknott Pass several times back to back because it was so much fun - I'd take it over my Mercedes AMG any day, yes it was cool to do 160mph past Berlin at 4am in that, but the little 80bhp Volkswagen gives me about 20x more enjoyment in day to day driving.

Well, you can't. Way before you get anywhere near the speed of light, random hydrogen atoms floating in space become hard radiation that will rip you to shreds. The idea of manned ships traveling at those speeds is complete fantasy.

GLM 5.3 Flash is incredibly cheap and imho as good as or better than Sonnet. I used it recently to fix an old server that my family had running serving some websites, and by fix it I mean I got it to log in over ssh, figure out what's running there, copy it out, log in to a brand new droplet on DO, set up a fresh instance of apache with everything patched up to latest, copy that ancient content over, make sure it runs with latest PHP which required several rounds of fixes, optimize the system so it runs on the smallest 512MB droplet, harden the system so that ideally no one ever needs to look at it for another 10 years - it took about an hour, and cost a grand total of 4 american.... _cents_

I use Opus at work since we have a nearly unlimited AI budget, but for personal projects I just use GLM 5.3 and I don't see much difference between that and Opus.

I'm actually surprised this was that easy to do, ngl

Re:Malware uses LLMs to rank victims by how much they're worth on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:40PM (#50317692)
Lol, you mean like here in the UK where all banks are closing down branches left and right? I think my nearest one is a 45 minute drive away, and last time I went in they just directed me to a terminal that was basically my exact online banking interface and I had to log in the same way I would have done at home. I don't know what kind of query would warrant speaking to an actual teller. If you're regularly sending money or even want to check your balance this cannot be sustainable, would be an enormous waste of time.

On one hand, you have to care for the hand that feeds you. On the other, I'd love for NASA to basically ignore the orange convicted felon and see what happens.
Bribing employees of private companies as a private person is not illegal(well, maybe it is where you live but I can't know the law everywhere).

>>Most underdisplay fingerprint scanners are between mediocre to garbage.

I don't think you've used one in the last 10 years based on your comment.

>>Usually they require a very specific state of the fingers, not too clean (don't work after washing and drying hands usually) and not too dirty, not too damaged, not too oily etc. Winter zero degree weather causing invisible condensation or wetness on a screen? Nope. Rain or drizzle? Nada.

Literally never had any of these problems and I unlock my phone 50+ times a day in all conditions. Again, try a modern phone and come back.

Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @07:00AM (#50302282)
The biggest example I can think of is WhatsApp - despite its popularity it still runs an iPhone app in compatibility mode on the iPad.
Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:03AM (#50301838)
Touche. I suppose it's because they clicked on the comments section where you read....comments. You reply to the the article or other comments - to me it's a conversation, in a way that posting a blog about why someone returned a phone isn't.
Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:58AM (#50301791)
How would they? We've had iPads around for literally forever and there are still iOS apps that start in a pretend phone mode on an iPad. And that's presumably much larger market for apple than the Duo is - why or how would they force developers to support it if they don't want to devote resources to it?
Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:56AM (#50301776)
The stupid thing is, fingerprint unlock inside the screen is a long solved tech. The touch sensors on a modern Samsung or Oppo or Xiaomi are literally instant. Why put it on a button on the side? Just to be different? Or is that a patent thing?
Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:55AM (#50301770)
Well that's the other thing - the idea that someone else needs to hear why I returned a phone in 2026 is just.....weird? Is it just hubris? Ego?
The escalator failure in 2018 in Rome that caused severe injuries to 24 people was found to be partially caused by safety systems being disabled and overriden because they caused too many false alarms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Rome_escalator_accident

Sure, but in the comment they are unambiguously talking about some unindenfitied man instead of Renee Good, like a bot replying with a script, ignoring my comment entirely. In fact an actual LLM would be smarter than this, so I suspect they are either an actual troll(as evidenced by every other reply of theirs just being avoidant) or a very poorly scripted bot.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50274143

I'm like 99% it's a bot. I said Renee Good in another comment and he started talking about a guy(???) even though no "guy" was mentioned anywhere. Now he makes up nonsense about Renee Good being an illegal immigrant?Reading this entire thread his comments read like an LLM set to "be as argumentative as possible, avoid stating any facts or bringing up any evidence behind your statements".
What guy? This comment proves more than anything else that you're a bot, or are not really able to read comprehensively. Multiple people have asked you to clarify your position and you always give some crappy excuse why you can't, walking around it like a shit circling the drain. And now you replied to me talking about a completely different person? Are you just following some script?
The one that means weak of character. The one that applies to the person who thinks Renee Good "gambled" by interacting with an ICE agent - only a feckless person could have such a poor moral stance.
What an awful, heartless, feckless take.

Edit: to expand on this - if you think interacting with an ICE agent(even if that interaction is blocking their way with your car) is "gambling" then I'm afraid you've accepted that you live in judge dredd society - where agents can execute someone on the street and face no repercussions. After all, they are defending the law, and Renee Good was a criminal for blocking them, right? You know what would happen in a normal country? She would be arrested. The coward of an officer pulled out his gun and fired at the vehicle driving away. I wonder if he'd have the balls to explain to her kid why mummy isn't coming home. I wonder if you'd tell her child that mummy isn't coming home because she "gambled". I'm disgusted by your comment.

Just remember that there is a child somewhere who saw their mum for the last time happily dropping them for school only to be shot by an ICE agent seconds after he called her a fucking bitch - and the agent faced no consequences for this. Every time I think about that kid my heart breaks. Every time I think about the cruelty of the system unwilling to at least put this one wrong right and prosecute the agent properly my heart breaks. What a unbelievably cruel world we live in.
There was a case exactly like this, and the ruling was literally "just because you could post officers next to the suspects house 24/7 and record their comings and going, doesn't mean that using illegal survailence to record their movement is the same". It has been tried in court and lost.

OP can both be right and I can struggle to understand their preference.
