The endgame for Uber is replacing their drivers with self-driving cars. The legal distinction of employee/contractor can only matter for what, 15-20 years until that happens?

Exactly. The real minimum wage will always be $0, and we will only hasten the moment when self-driving cars are worthwhile investments if we continue to insist that labor should cost more.
