Re:PlayStation cancels Kojima's PHYSINT, Xbox steps in on Thursday September 10, 2026 @07:23AM (#49641841)
Pretty remarkable. There are only three reasons I intend to buy a PS5 and Kojima games are one of them.
Re:Stop Making TUIs on Saturday August 22, 2026 @01:42PM (#49401948)
Found this article to be a bit of a slog, burying the lede until after you’ve sifted through a rambling list of irrelevant vibe coded apps by OP. The actual argument came across in places but I am unpersuaded. Unsure if that’s due to the article structure or the argument’s own merits.
Eddington (2025) was a documentary.
Re:Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro? on Saturday July 18, 2026 @04:54PM (#48962290)
You’re getting downvoted for this which is crazy.
Re:Colossus: The Forbin Project on Sunday May 17, 2026 @08:03PM (#48174270)
Nolan makes cerebral films for dumb people. I find most of them to be entertaining and fun, but they do lean a bit too much into profundity as a vibe without a whole lot of actual substance.
Re:Honky-Tonk Tokyo (2020) on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @03:55PM (#44893041)
my gf in Tokyo years ago was a country folk singer. played slide on a metal resonator guitar. for much of my time there my evenings were spent at folks and roots music bars, listening to talented live musicians. in States we live in abject poverty, culturally.
Re:Hiroshima (1946) on Monday August 04, 2025 @06:24PM (#44792002)
I just bought this paperback.
your reasoning falls apart because mass transit options are inherently faster due to the geometric-space efficiencies gained by their form factors. You just need to induce enough people to participate in it to cross a tipping point where it becomes financially viable to run regular service, e.g., in NYC taking a train is often the fastest.
Re:Thoughts on Thinking on Friday May 16, 2025 @05:08PM (#44009843)
Reminds me of this:

“There are no shortcuts to knowledge, especially knowledge gained from personal experience. Following conventional wisdom and relying on shortcuts can be worse than knowing nothing at all.” ― Ben Horowitz

This is precisely the reasoning I bring up. In essence traffic congestion is an externality not unlike pollution. What society now pays in the form of a financial levy it formerly paid in the form of a wasted time. We've made explicit a cost that was already there, and by doing so the system can respond to it and behave more intelligently.
This is a curious form of fundamentalism. "All motion is good, and damn any effort to coordinate it."
Finally a budget cut I can actually celebrate.
what if the movie is actually bad
Re:They Might Be Giants Flood EPK Promo (1990) [video] on Thursday March 27, 2025 @11:41AM (#43494801)
I just had this experience with my girlfriend last week. she could not fathom this particle man I kept singing about was an actual song.
Re:Plex Is Going to Make You Pay for Its Best Free Feature on Saturday March 22, 2025 @01:00AM (#43443713)
This is certainly disappointing.

When did we stop referring to this as Parallax Effects
Re:Los Angeles fires expose inflated US home prices on Thursday January 09, 2025 @11:19PM (#42652412)
what incompetence is that? Having a hard time seeing the link between technological progress and thebsize of wild fires.
Re:Meta Wants More AI Bots on Facebook and Instagram on Thursday January 02, 2025 @01:28PM (#42577184)
I ask you honestly -- why? Why do you think it's awesome? It sounds like hell to me.

love to see someone I went to high school with on HN's front page :)
TLDR; libertarian take that misses a lot of structural and historical factors. save yourself wasting the fifteen minutes on this high school grade evolutionary psychology postulating
Re:First Images from Euclid Are In on Tuesday October 22, 2024 @07:28AM (#41913225)
what is this 2002? Being immediately assailed by sound when clicking a link is not a pleasant experience.
Re:Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week on Monday September 16, 2024 @04:45PM (#41560674)
This sounds exactly like the team/culture that launched Marcus at Goldman Sachs. A lot of people went to Amazon from that team and seemed to indicate it was very much the same type of deal.
Re:Better Dotfiles on Friday September 06, 2024 @03:44PM (#41469131)
as soon as I encountered 'whilst' I closed the tab. I know this will make me seem philistine and perhaps the author is British but this conspicuous substitution for 'while' just feels insufferable and pretentious. anyway, it seems like the author is just managing their dotfiles as opposed to some community-built solution. not sure why that would be better. guess I'll never know.

we've been online for so long now...

Re:Captain Beefheart's Commandments of Guitar Playing on Friday July 26, 2024 @04:38PM (#41082061)
Zoot Allures was pretty good. besides that the only thing I like by him is his earliest stuff, like Lumpy Gravy. 90% of the his discography is unlistenable to me, and I listen mostly to stuff that people would classify as unlistenable.
