Ask HN: How does ChatGPT cite its sources?

My understanding is that generative models make things up, so how does ChatGPT reference sources in its own answer? Is Bing's ChatGPT different from the earlier version? One solution I think of is that ChatGPT will do a search and then summarises the top results to form an answer. This will also allow ChatGPT to access the latest information.

And the featured post is by someone (RA) who is probably not going to contribute regularly to MDN Web Docs. I have plenty platforms to read RA's writings besides this service.

If this service is going to support the development of existing MDN Web Docs, I would pay for it. But i suspect most of the revenue will going to pay for these one-off experts.
