Re:Phasing out coal power by 2050 doable for China on Wednesday January 08, 2020 @02:28PM (#21994838)
The Chinese government might have enough high-level nuclear waste to make self-warming clothing for the majority of the population. If they use high energy gamma emitters, people could actually warm up those around them as well - increasing overall thermal efficiency. What could go wrong?
Re:Good times create weak men on Monday December 30, 2019 @08:18AM (#21913135)
At the Nuremberg trials after World War II, top nazi Hermann Goering testified that the war was necessary to strengthen the German people. This is because they believed the race evolution writings of Madam Helena Blavatsky in her books "The Secret Doctrine" where military conflict killed off the weak leaving the strong to reproduce - although of course, somehow none of that personally applied to the top nazi leaders themselves (cough cough)...
Oppenheimer invented the neutron ray gun.
... and the other eight were delicious.
Re:Ask HN: Nuclear Cruise Missile Fuel on Tuesday August 13, 2019 @12:58PM (#20687696)
The video I refer to shows the sea and some coastline, with the fireball far offshore. Good comment, but no.

Ask HN: Nuclear Cruise Missile Fuel

The recent civilian video showing the very large shock wave from the recent Russian offshore military explosion, as evidenced by condensation behind the shock wave front, indicates either a low-power nuclear detonation or massive chemical explosion. Since the fission reaction rate for normal density plutonium is too low to achieve nuclear explosive yield, plutonium must be imploded to give...

From an energy efficiency standpoint, yes.
I disagree - it seems logical to transport all of the earth's inhabitants to one side of the planet, and have them all push downwards at the same time.

Would you please list some other things that you are not going to do?
Re:Reasons why humans won't be cloned on Thursday July 11, 2019 @06:39PM (#20416542)
A clone is an identical twin born decades later, similar to having a frozen IVF identical twin embryo thawed out and raised decades later (which is currently possible).
Re:Space miners race to an asteroid worth quintillions on Sunday June 30, 2019 @09:09PM (#20321692)
Please forgive my ignorance, but how does this reach the surface of the earth without causing some form of physical disaster?
Theoretically this could mean that children born in nudist colonies would have a reduced risk of learning disabilities, which would be amenable to statistical analysis.
These look totally cool through a submarine periscope because of the excellent optics and magnification levels available.
This might actually be difficult to discern, as the site has "shadow banning" where an unpopular posting or comment can be banned - but not from the original poster, so they do not know it happened. I personally consider this a deceitful practice, as the person posting is being deceived into thinking other site users can see what they write but this is not true. So if someone has an unpopular opinion they might not know of its unpopularity due to this practice.
Re:GM fungus rapidly kills 99% of malaria mosquitoes on Friday May 31, 2019 @10:58AM (#20061477)
Is there any indication of effect on the mosquito's natural predators, or on animal life that might eat the infected dead bodies such as different ant species?

Ask HN: Reporting Hacker News UI Bugs

I accidentally stumbled on what might be a HN shadow banning "bug", where it is trivially easy to determine when individual comments have been shadow banned. What is the correct way to report this to HNews?

Re:The Concept of “Race” Is a Lie on Sunday May 19, 2019 @01:46PM (#19954452)
This is only true if you have an understanding of genetics grounded in scientifically verifiable physical reality.
Re:What if we could simulate the human brain? on Tuesday May 14, 2019 @12:04PM (#19910772)
If one or two dozen human genes specific to brain development (out of the approximately 20,000 total in the human genome) can be spliced into other primates, then in a country where these would not in any way be legally considered human it might be possible to perform experiments on the resulting (legally) animal brains to allow creation of such a simulation. Of course we all know no country is performing such gene splicing, cough, cough.
How then are the effects of hallucinogens accounted for?
I am usually curious as to what caused the gray, as I never see any reason given for it and can only read the (gray) text to try and figure out what possibly was the reason for it. I have never considered that the same logic would also be used by others, yet the "Streisand Effect" idea certainly makes sense to me.
If this was in any way related to an increase in the number of synapses per neuron cell, or neuron interconnections, this would be measurable and a comparative study should show a substantive difference in this value between modern-day humans and the existing great apes.
Would not this make the pharmacy sales clerks who handled the sale, in addition to the pharmacist, indictable both under charges of accessory to murder and under conspiracy to commit murder?
Under M.M.T., why does the USA have a federal income tax?
Re:Ask HN: How Is HN Moderated? on Monday April 08, 2019 @09:32AM (#19604985)
I have seen articles with "flagged" but do not understand what this actually means in practice, as those articles are not removed from view. Does it mean that comments are closed?
Re:Which cloud services are most 'trustworthy'? on Saturday April 06, 2019 @08:04PM (#19593833)
I use a Google Compute Engine (GCE) 4-core "high cpu" unit for my personal hobby curve and surface fitting web site zunzun.com - the site requires large, irregular bursts of CPU for user calculations, mostly scipy and matplotlib. For this purpose I would rate them a 5 out of 4 stars.
As I understand it, this article's use of the phrase "Coronal Mass Injections" is incorrect.
Re:Ask HN: Why am I shadow banned? on Friday April 05, 2019 @09:02AM (#19582071)
If there is a shadow ban, why would an email to the people who put the ban in place change anything? I do not understand how this would work.
Do you have an equivalent ticket status of "Unable to reproduce" available? I have in the past put tickets in "On Hold" status with "Unable to reproduce" as the reason for the hold status.
