This hit home hard. Wondering if this is the case with giving advice as well ? In case of giving advice you are not selling a product but definitely selling an alternative path of action you would like there other person to take. And they will only take it if they understand you in the first place.

I recently signed up for After pay. Which has an abysmal security requirements given a financial lending app. Which is a different story. Now, when I logged into the app I noticed that they already grabbed my profile picture from google. This is the first time I noticed this happening. Did I authenticated afterpay to access my google public profile by agreeing to their terms ? How do they do...
I like how Sarah Mei says, "Inline everything". You don't get to go on a refactoring crusade. You do it on a daily basis when you are working on the actual production issues. Easy to say but based on my experience, it is the only way to move things in the right direction and keep them that way.
This is an interesting observation. I like to think myself as a slow programmer. Do you think discussing this in an interview before you actually got the job in order to evaluate if you are fit to the role joining is a good idea ?
Something I am thinking of similar to this. Firefighter vs Gardener.
The firefighter focuses on the high stakes issue at hand and make sure it is solved in time and without much damage. The Gartner ensues the fire doesn't happen in the first place by making sure he is cleaning up the dried leaves in the first place.
But in a company environment, the firefighters are more valued are praised because that's something you can see and quantify. where as the regular cleanup/refactoring and fine-tuning the api is invisible and boring. Just a thought.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you my friend.

Hello HN hive mind,There was a research paper which came out a year or two back which I am struggling to find and thought you all might help me out.
The summary of the article/paper is, when asked to improve a system/software people always thought of adding things to it but never about removing. Thanks.

Hello HN what resources/tools you use for keeping yourself mentally sharp apart from the regular things we all already do like programming/reading/exercises.
Just to add to this, anything processed is generally not great for health. After going through a lot of gut issues and reading many articles and books here is what I understood..
Avoid things which...
* contains more than 3 components which you can't understand.
* your grandma doesn't recognise as food.
* comes in a plastic cover and doesn't degrade for a long time.
I know this pretty much eliminates the entire super market but if you go through what I have you will rethink everything you put in your mouth.
That means you are pushing your limits. Don't start with a full day fasting. Start slow by doing some form of intermittent fasting or time restricted feeding. I would say go for having early dinner and a late breakfast to begin with. Once you are adapted to log hours of not eating, skip one of the meals in the day, depends on your situation but the easiest one to start with is skipping breakfast. Then you can slowly work your way to full day fasting.
LOL! Isn't that every dysfunctional organisation ?
I remember coming across the first sick systems article you mentioned almost 5 years back when I was with a company which the symptoms of a sick system and this article helped immensely. While I could know that the place is bad and not suitable for me I couldn't really pinpoint why it is bad and how I can get out of it. This article gave me a great perspective and actually propelled my career.
> every parent is just a human who is mostly winging it trying the best they can
This is an eye opening statement. Often as a kid, parents tend to look like gods and superheros because they are doing things which are impossible for us. As we age we tend to notice the shortcomings both from the current situation as they are ageing and from our child hood which we have better understanding now. Again, second order thinking helps a lot here I guess.
This is amazing. I just gave a quick glance and love your style.
I just wish you would have provided ipynb instead of md. It would be so much fun to just modify and run as I am learning. Thank you!
Python might not be energy efficient in the hardware it is definitely efficient in the wetware.
It is a pain to work with invoke now. It is all find and dandy for the basic features but you going to hit the seams soon you start trying advanced stuff. Looks like the project is going to be abandoned.
How does this compare to pyinvoke or they are completely different ?
Damn, so many goodies to play with. Thanks for the list.
I remember reading sam newman and if I am not wrong, he says something along the lines of the team size, problem at hand and few other facts determine which one to choose. Nothing is a silver bullet. Trite, but it's having knowledge of multiple architectures and using the wisdom to choose when to use one.
I am happy that there is some action happening in the direction of saving natural resources. But I am constantly seeing them getting concentrated in the hands of organisations or people who are enthusiastic about the cause "now". I can't stop myself from worrying what what will be the second order effects of most of these changes. What happens their ideals change in the future. I am not talking about this specific organisation but the whole trend in general. As in, vesting the responsibility in the hands of people or bodies of people rather than the government in general.
This led me to the water-cooler complains video
https://youtu.be/9E_rtUgUF58
and it is a good point. We somehow tend to find solace in engaging in water cooler complaints. If I were to change one thing about my professional career, especially in the early days is avoid the water-cooler complaints and people who are engaging in them as well. It is definitely a time sink and no one is benefiting from it.
