theguardian.com is hotbed of climate alarmism.
The only ones against free speech these days are the far/weird-left. They have some twisted logic about not tolerating intolerant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance). They are very selective whom they see as worth not tolerating.

"The thing is: I have yet to see a project done overseas at that sort of hourly rate that has actually gone well."

The argument sounds like something Rush Limbaugh would say, "It's cold where I live, therefore global warming is a lie!".

Re:Ask HN: Small product, single founder success stories? on Friday September 23, 2011 @04:47PM (#3031526)
I'm the solo founder of PrintFriendly.com

Two years ago I applied to YC, and was turned down in the interview process. They asked, "how is PrintFriendly going to make a billion dollars"? I'm still trying to answer that (or at least a more modest version of the question).

Today PrintFriendly revenue is about $10k/mo, 1.2M visits/mo, and slow but steady growth.

I'm happy with the results, delighted actually. However, I'm not travelling the world, or working from a beach. I work hard everyday and reinveste the capital, to try and build a stable/strong/significant organization.

Sweet. I've used iconfinder.com over the years. Its now a default stop when searching an icon. Seems to be getting better everytime i visit too. Keep up the good work!
Barf. Sad, to see Hacker News being used as a marketing channel.
Vision and stamina to keep pushing till it done.

Quality, creativity, and difficult problems are the devils tools!

"All your events are belong to us"

Got scared when i read this. Gotta be a mistype (second headline, middle of page).

Re:Ask HN: Time to pull the plug? on Tuesday April 19, 2011 @09:19PM (#2464866)
Thanks, glad you like.

My motivations were fairly pure, wanted to build a platform that gave citizens more power. Also thought there could be a way to monetize (ethically) with traction.

Got some press in the early days, and believe the problem is other than exposure. The site just isn't filling a need. Need to come up with something people really want.

Re:Ask HN: Time to pull the plug? on Tuesday April 19, 2011 @06:53PM (#2464566)
Yes, currently getting 3K-15k visits/mo. About 20% repeat visits.

Agree that giving people a way to "be heard" has value, just need to get the process right.

Polarizing would be a good tactic. Not sure I want to go there though. I've still got some idealism ;)

Steps to gain traction were focused on making the product viral (send to friends, embed vote on site/facebook, etc).

Also partnerships with other organizations, for example, democracyinaction.org had an email your reps widget (powered by govit).

I like the idea, but think I'd need more users before I could attract the attention of senators/aides/other.

Congress members have their websites, email list of their supporters, would need to offer something they didn't have.

Re:Ask HN: Time to pull the plug? on Tuesday April 19, 2011 @05:29PM (#2464306)
Main reason is the money. I'm not a programmer, so fixing bugs, update scrappers, server, etc. cost money.

Ask HN: Time to pull the plug?

I launched Govit.com in 2008. It's an eGov site. You vote on Legislation, and votes are sent to government representatives. It got press, but no real traction (3k-15k visits/mo).Is there any opportunity here? Any ideas to keep out of deadpool? Or is it time to man-up and pull the plug?

haha. "Video is dull as dish water when it's talking heads".

Works better for categories like eSports, Cooking, How To.

The future of Blogs is Video?

Video is sweeter than reading, especially on iPhone, iPad, droid.Justin.Tv, Leo Laporte, Revision3, Dvorak, Adam Curry, Jason Calacanis (ThisWeekIn.com), are blazing the trail.I'm watching more videos, than reading blogs lately. How about you?

A nice actionable insight, "You can't directly control where your thoughts drift. If you're controlling them, they're not drifting. But can control them indirectly, by controlling what situations you let yourself get into."
