Awesome, 173 empty directories!
Re:Tell HN: DigitalOcean London Was Down on Wednesday August 09, 2023 @06:06AM (#37060599)
Have just noticed the same.

Their status page does not reflect any issues at the time of writing, I can access the remote console for my droplets although their interface is very slow.

Re:British pound hits record low against the dollar on Monday September 26, 2022 @02:46AM (#32980183)
As someone working in the industry, I can say that unfortunately NHS funds are very poorly managed with lots of corruption within management. My believe is that a lot of the staff are passionate and hard-working, however at least an equal number of staff are worn-down, disillusioned and dispassionate due to years of managerial neglect and high public expectation.

There is also a believe that the NHS is a single national entity, which is not the case. Both Wales and Scottish have a national trust whereas England has 100's, totally 217 trusts as of April 2020 [1]. This does not allow for combined purchasing power, shared resources and causes duplicate effort in almost every area.

How about dentistry? Seems odd that for the most part that's not covered under the NHS. It wasn't until adulthood I understood all the jokes about British peoples teeth!

My hope is that we can move to another model that is directly free to the end user, reduce the eye watering waiting times and put the almost £200B annual funding to good use.

Having young kids makes subtitles essential if you want to watch the news or any other low quality media in the background whilst they are playing!

Got used to it after a couple of years and found them useful for deciphering speech that would otherwise be missed.

Re:I cut the bite of the Apple logo out of my iPhone on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @09:38AM (#30360502)
Waiting for the follow up with the creation of a apple-cut-out bumper to fix this.

I also took a few seconds to figure out how to get to the extra images.

Whilst I would generally agree, in the days of simultaneously juggling working and childcare, devices like tablets can be a game changer. When configured correctly with educational apps and sensible time restrictions, it is great to see my toddler learn things for himself.

The world has changed both with our roles are parents and the environment which we exist in. My 2 year old would quite happily be able to order food via an unavoidable touch screen interface at a fast food restaurant!

Now.. to get him started with vim.

Re:PHP's Git server compromised, moving to GitHub on Monday March 29, 2021 @09:25AM (#26621171)
Cool, I'll have to get updated and checkout Laravel Octane soon after clearing a work backlog, did notice Taylor tweet something about it.

I'm guessing your benchmarks are using native php-fpm and not through docker on your MBP?

Re:PHP's Git server compromised, moving to GitHub on Monday March 29, 2021 @08:54AM (#26620821)
Discovering Laravel a couple of years ago was perhaps one of the most significant things that made PHP interesting again after 20+ years of working with PHP.

It's refreshing (as far as PHP goes) and worth checking out with an open mind. Performance on the other hand, that take a little more work.

Which aspect(s) of the UI do you find to be amazing? Asking for educational purposes.

You seem malnourished. Are you suffering from internal parasites?
Re:Ask HN: Is Your Spacebar Working on YouTube? on Wednesday March 10, 2021 @03:32PM (#26415818)
Google are so clumsy accidentally leaving in these hard to find bugs throughout their products eh?

I guess the only solution is for us all to switch to Chrome, everything works fine that way.

It all seems too good to be true, memory and ssd upgrades aside, the M1 devices seem to be fantastic value for money. Also waiting for a 16" M1, decided to order a mini in the meantime.
This is pretty funny, can't wait to replace my hot to the touch macbook pro with an m1 model when the larger models come out.
Re:Europe's Vaccine Disaster on Friday January 29, 2021 @08:35PM (#25965122)
12% of the population? No, surely what's meant is an increase of 12% to the usual number of deaths per year.
I agree with your message in general, however believe that the new M1 Mac mini has the best (and sufficient) cooling among the new line up.
Re:No Config for Old Men on Saturday November 28, 2020 @09:13PM (#25242411)
What! A default, non-personalised vim setup?!
Re:No Config for Old Men on Saturday November 28, 2020 @09:09PM (#25242383)
I recently moved back to Arch Linux after spending the last few years using a hackintosh full time. There shouldn't be any reason to need to keep installing an OS; if you're competent, you should be able to correct any issues.

For many peoples workflows including my own, Windows would pose a far greater headache to get to a productive state. macOS works great, up to the point where you want to enjoy freedom to use your computer as you see fit, certainly less hassle for development (in general) than Windows though imo :)

Re:Brow.sh: a modern text-based browser on Tuesday November 17, 2020 @06:28PM (#25131295)
Pretty cool project, didn't feel super snappy on sites which had animation however. Think I'm going to stick with Firefox.
Re:macOS Big Sur on Thursday November 12, 2020 @07:43PM (#25077389)
As far as I can see, there is literally no way to disable network caching via a toggle in the dev tools. This is a huge problem for me.
Re:Why I link to Wayback Machine instead of original web content on Tuesday September 08, 2020 @04:53AM (#24406501)
I find that web archive pages always appear broken —- perhaps a lot of js or css is not properly archived?
Re:How Did Vim Become So Popular? on Wednesday July 01, 2020 @05:01AM (#23699409)
Nice vim demo on youtube, how does the sequenced numbering work? Can vim increment a number without any plugins?
Re:Show HN: I made a simple PDF text editor on Sunday May 31, 2020 @03:23AM (#23367874)
I found this too, didn't seem too obvious at first though.
What do you use three different computers for? Running different OS’s I assume?

A true inspiration, thanks for sharing.

Re:Are TUI email clients dead in 2020? on Sunday May 31, 2020 @02:16AM (#23367625)
Back in the days before the popularisation of webmail I used (Al)pine email client and found it way more convenient to ssh into a box to manage emails vs managing desktops email clients on different local machines.

For the past 8 years or so I've been stuck using gmail and have tried a few desktop clients, all of them feeling a little sluggish (especially electron apps).

Do pine/mutt have real users in 2020? Are they exclusively for the super nerdy who have complex configurations to enable them to manage their attachments on remote servers?

What email client do you use?
