It would be so much fun to make replicas of his art on the "Etch A Sketch" [1].

I am glad to see a happy user here! :)

That's super helpful. I will get this fixed soon :)

I am super glad you like it! The primary reason I haven't introduced support for iframes is that it requires much wider permissions (instead of just access to the current tab after clicking the "ARIA DevTools" icon you'd need to grant access to all data on every website you visit). I will research if things changed since I last checked, though.
Re:Show HN: Visualization of website accessibility tree on Monday October 07, 2024 @11:43AM (#41767134)
Is there a chance to get a link to the page? I'd love to try it out and fix.
Re:Show HN: Visualization of website accessibility tree on Monday October 07, 2024 @10:45AM (#41766518)
When I designed the tool I've tried to mirror the experience of screen readers users instead of only displaying ARIA roles and properties.

For example you have to navigate the page with your keyboard only. If a dropdown isn't accessible - it's instantly clear for the user. Another example are tables. They present only one cell + their headers at the time. I think it's super close to the actual experience of screen reader users.

Thank you! I really think there's a lot of potential in ARIA DevTools. It's quite popular (at least for my standards) but I never had any connection with people that live and breathe web accessibility. And the devil is in the details here so to be fully fair, WAVE is most probably more accurate.

When COVID-19 started I needed something to get busy to not go crazy. I happened to work on our app WCAG compliance for a few months at the time and was frustrated by the state of of accessibility-related tools for developers.I've spend two months delivering a tool that is easy to understand and helps catching accessibility issues on my apps. A few years later it's pretty popular despite being...

Show HN: A new kind of React store

Hey HN!I am a developer on a break from employment. I want to use this time to recharge and work on projects that I always wanted to do but lacked energy after regular job.One of the problems that we never solved properly is web application state management. What I want is a library that:- encourages separating application state and logic from React components- makes dealing async state dead...

I am creating custom hardware for my own SaaS. So far I've designed a custom 3D printed case and wrote early version of firmware.

It feels great to create something physical after over 10 years of working on CRUD web apps.

My work is open source and available at https://github.com/ziolko/eink-calendar-display.

Ask HN: How do I grow my open source project

A few years ago I've created a semi-successful open source project called ARIA DevTools [1][2]. It's a browser extension that shows a nice visualisation of a website accessibility tree.People continue to say that they really like the extension and I'd love to improve it, but honestly it doesn't feel great to spend my free time on something that doesn't bring any revenue. On the other hand, I'd...

So glad that people find my little project useful!

Re:Portr – open-source ngrok alternative designed for teams on Wednesday April 03, 2024 @08:50AM (#39916770)
Last year I've configured a simple ssh + Caddy based ngrok alternative and it works beautifully every since. I've shared instructions on https://github.com/ziolko/tunnel for anyone interested.

During the pandemic I've created an open source browser plugin that visualizes website accessibility tree. Fast forward a few years it has over 6000 active users with almost no attention from my side. The tool is far from complete and I am looking for an motivation to push this further. The motivation might be a star on Github repository or a few nice words from users in this thread (It's easy...

You can easily turn a spreadsheet into a small CRUD database with HTTP API using Google Apps Script. I've shared an example a few years ago: https://spreadapi.roombelt.com/setup.
Re:My product is my garden (2020) on Saturday April 29, 2023 @03:08PM (#35756066)
I love this perspective. And I love these moments when I demo my project (people can request a demo on the home page) and people realize that it actually solves the problem they are struggling with for a long time.

I also deliberately choose not to do things that I don't like (like content marketing) even though they'd for sure bring me more revenue. It has to be enjoyable because otherwise it'd be just another job.

Re:Tunnelmole – give your local servers a public URL on Tuesday February 28, 2023 @09:53AM (#34969915)
Some time ago I created an instruction on setting up a DIY ngrok alternative with just Caddy and SSH [1]. Works really well for me ever since.

Edit: The nice thing about this is that it allows you to proxy to any any target port including e.g. standard email ports. This was very helpful while I was working locally on a custom email server.

Re:Security for front-end engineer job interview on Thursday February 16, 2023 @12:47PM (#34822313)
I interview people for a front-end engineer position regularly and most candidates fail on security-related questions

I wrote a blog post describing these topics. It might sounds like basic stuff for some people, but from my experience 90% candidates just don't know these things.

I hope this content will help you in the next interview :)

Re:Ask HN: So you moved off Heroku, where did you go? on Tuesday October 04, 2022 @03:07AM (#33077370)
I have moved my side project (single server handling ~3 requests/s) from Heroku to Clever Cloud about 3 years ago and they work very reliably for me.

The truth is, on this scale Heroku worked well too. The reason to move for me was that they are an EU company so there is less questions from my clients about GDPR compliance.

I'd say the UI is quite old-school and I am missing good built-in metrics. There are some paid add-ons providing metrics but I'd really want to have it built-in.

I think he started much earlier - his blog mentions 2014: https://levels.io/product-hunt-hacker-news-number-one

I agree though, that sometimes you need to "just do it" using the simplest tools out there.

Re:World time buddy dropped their paid plan on Monday August 08, 2022 @03:36PM (#32390014)
I've used this tool for free for several years and decided to support them by buying a subscription (even though AdBlock does really good job there so ads don't disturb me).

I was surprised to see that they recently got rid of their paid plan and provide ad-free experience after signing in.

I have my own product in this area which is basically a web app. Then I ask customers to open it with the most popular Android kiosk app and it works like a charm.
Re:I fucking hate Jira on Monday June 20, 2022 @03:37PM (#31814716)
I get paid for developing plugins for Jira since 2014. One can complain about UX and speed of this software, but I saw it being the hearth of businesses of all kinds and sizes.

Just like you won't get fired for using React in your project, you won't get fired for using Jira. It will support whatever your workflow is (and I don't mean only software development, but things like hiring or office management). If the built-in features are not enough, you will find a plugin that meets your needs.

I think long-term it's important to use a tool that give you this flexibility.
