All a new foundation needs for traction is a policy against admin dashboard spam
Re:FBI recommends using an ad blocker (2022) on Sunday September 08, 2024 @08:33PM (#41484482)
The social contract only works when content providers choose an ad network that doesn't serve deceptive, misleading or outright malicious ads. I'd rather protect myself than be polite.
There's no good explanation beacause fibre doesn't 'cancel out' sugar.

Re:Ask HN: What do you do for online privacy? on Friday November 11, 2022 @05:59AM (#33559231)
linux distro with full disk encryption, unique password for every site (self managed), nextcloud provider + cryptomator for cloud storage, opensnitch or similar for firewall, agressive ad/tracker blocking at dns and browser level, lineageos for mobile devices, preference foss software, pirate all media, mullivad vpn sometimes

Re:It's tough being an Azure fan on Thursday September 23, 2021 @09:07PM (#28637525)
I don't think being a "fan" of tech products/services is healthy. Having a preference is fine, but loyalty won't work in your favour.

Re:Helm is a personal server that lives where you do on Monday August 30, 2021 @04:25AM (#28353694)
I feel like this is just capialising on people's privacy and security fears.

Helm provides an offsite backup anyway, so why not just use a NextCloud provider + Cryptomator?

And email is a nightmare to self host and maintain, especially for a primary address. If you need real secure communication just use something other than email.

Re:Apple chief executive Tim Cook gets $750m payout on Friday August 27, 2021 @08:31AM (#28326965)

You're asking the wrong question.

It should be: Why is there no disincentive to take unfair advantage of cheap foreign labor?

Re:How safe is Colin Furze's tunnel? on Saturday July 10, 2021 @08:25AM (#27792902)
i assume this type of endeavour would require some kind of permit and in turn a degree of engineering approval

that said, i stopped watching collin's videos a long time ago because of an apparent (however edited) blatant disregard for basic safety principles

Isn't that title a little contradictory?
Re:Uber and Lyft to swap data on banned drivers on Thursday March 11, 2021 @04:53PM (#26429485)
I assume there is safeguards. But for the same reason these lists aren't public, their policies aren't either.
I'm sure George Carlin would love knowing one of his quotes prefaced an article about how a company can squeeze more advertising money out of it's user base.

While I'm still complaining:

"You now need an email to sign up..." You don't, you can just click 'next' without entering one.

"The mobile experience was improved" It wasn't. It's designed to be so frustrating you just download the app.

Depending on your definition of 'online' this is true of any app you use.

Telegram could at least take a similar approach to Tinder, who have already learnt from a similar mistake.
