I don't know much containerization outside of docker, but you can definitely apt-get some dependencies even inside docker containers.
"they could afford to jettison those contracts"

Don't they have to have a contract with the state to have access to the cables? IE: any ISP would have a state contract. If it ceased those contracts, it wouldn't be able to function as an ISP.

"port 443 is serving up a response when jaruzel.com is requested on that port"

The only response is a 404, which is exactly what should be displayed (to the best of my knowledge) for a domain that isn't configured for that IP/port when there are other sites utilizing that IP/port.

Isn't it supposed to learn from you? IE, answering technically correctly but what it thinks is incorrect is slightly annoying for you, but better for the system in the long run. (ie better for everyone)

Who said it was Free Software?
Re:Dark Algorithms and UX in Health Insurance on Tuesday January 23, 2018 @07:10AM (#16212924)
I think that's pretty heavily reliant on the rest of the industry. If it's an industry that no one feels very strongly about, there's probably something to be said for hanging out in the middle: some scummy shit, but no nickle and diming. If it's something significant where every company is hated already, a new company coming in with nothing more than "we want nothing more than to provide a good service" is likely going to thrive.
Can you be compelled to provide something that you don't have access to? Were anyone else in this situation, wouldn't it be plausible to simply claim you don't know that password?
How the hell would they get accurate crime stats from 1200? A year so long ago that I feel the need to suffix it with "AD".
Docker is just a container, anything you can boot you can put in a container. That doesn't make what he did "basically a docker image".
Cool. If I had the money, that would totally be my next phone.
Never said it was likely, just hoped for.

> Many of the cases where I care about perf are cases in which the app is multithread savvy

Yeah, as would be expected from most people on this site. Sad thing is, there's a bunch of pissed-off gamers right now who were on the hype train expecting Ryzen to be the next big thing in gaming, but it's far from it. Ryzen is great, just not amazing for gaming.

That's fucking cool. Is that the same "CAT" that makes things like bulldozers and scoops?
I like to imagine that if Battle.net ever died, they would release a patch for overwatch that would remove the battle.net connectivity.

> really giant non-native UI elements

You act like this is a problem exclusive to Electron apps. People have been doing shit like that forever.

Re:Qt Quick WebGL Streaming on Wednesday March 01, 2017 @02:31AM (#13762016)
While you do raise some valid points, and some that I disagree with, I've grown to appreciate such apps as of late. There was a time not long ago where half the shit on my computer was Java because that was the only practical way to make a decent cross-platform application without having to relearn different things for each platform. Yeah, the whole "apps built on web-technology" movement could use some refinement to reduce bloat and such, but when done correctly, it seems to work out pretty well for the most part.
Re:Qt Quick WebGL Streaming on Monday February 27, 2017 @10:19PM (#13750858)
I have noticed that with some Electron apps in the past, but I had actually never noticed that with Discord. I thought it was native for the first 4 months I was using it because it was just done so well, no lag and such. The one thing that usually gives away electron apps is their lack of custom right-click handling, meaning a right-click will give you the generic context menu you would normally see in a browser. Discord seems to handle all right-clicks with their own context menus which is why I never caught onto it at first.
I don't think this tool is really meant for the people that are looking for ECC RAM.
Re:Qt Quick WebGL Streaming on Monday February 27, 2017 @08:53PM (#13750470)
I've never had any issue with Discord feeling "not quite right".
Re:Show HN: Poxi – A Hackable Pixel Art Editor on Monday February 27, 2017 @07:53PM (#13750174)
Oh my god, it's like Picross! I grew up with that on DS, and I'm extremely excited to play this now. I can't wait for it to show up on Android.
Ah, okay.
HN is in the list? I'm here all the time and I don't see a red HN dot.
> For every extra cycle the hardware engineers give us, we software engineers figure out some way to soak it up

This seems to be true in way too much of the tech field these days. My go-to example is drive storage. Every year, our hard drives get increasingly larger, by pretty big margins even, but game developers just make bigger and less compressed assets, even though they're not needed.

Re:List of Sites Affected by Cloudflare's HTTPS Traffic Leak on Saturday February 25, 2017 @07:37PM (#13734861)
I don't suppose you or anyone else might know: is there any way this could be adapted to work with Firefox history?
Re:Keep – A Meta-CLI tool for shell commands on Friday February 24, 2017 @10:36PM (#13729887)
Interesting project, can't wait to toy around with it a bit. It solves a problem that I had never considered a problem, but it kind of is now that I'm thinking about it.

Is there something wrong with that?

I'm not trying to be an ass, just curious.

Re:Cloudflare and FastMail: Your info is safe on Friday February 24, 2017 @10:18PM (#13729827)
I've already (mostly) moved away from google, at least for email. This isn't Google vs. Fastmail to me, this is Fastmail vs. Zoho. (Which I already have a free account with for my domain)
Re:Cloudflare and FastMail: Your info is safe on Friday February 24, 2017 @09:54PM (#13729736)
It does look crazy fast. I'd love to try it, but not worth the cost for personal use.
Re:Starting an Internet Service Provider on Wednesday February 22, 2017 @04:41AM (#13704342)
Definitely, I use it for most of my comms. (Except for Telegram which I use for general messaging)
Re:Starting an Internet Service Provider on Wednesday February 22, 2017 @04:40AM (#13704339)
I guess so, just seemed a bit odd at face value. All this WISP stuff seems really interesting to me. I don't think I have what it takes to start one myself, but I wish I could find someone starting out in the business who needs a partner.
