Is that the reason why millions of people tried to come to the states, legally or illegally, every single year?

Who is taking the loss if a PSP has a robust and up-to-date fraud detection and prevention measures, but fraud still happens?

I see, thank you. You would assume that one would use tactics accordingly.

How do you bully people into joining a company?
I’m surprised that NPR is still held with high regards after they just ignored Hunter Biden’s story and justify it with “not really stories”.

It would be funny if it redirects to Zoom.
Re:Brew Is a Bad Neighbor on Saturday September 03, 2022 @04:10PM (#32705605)
I clicked on this and expected something really bad about brew. It turns out just the default setting doesn’t satisfy the writer’s use case. The energy and attitude of this article really sticks me as odd especially considering Brew is free to use and not some sort of default package manager that comes with your macOS.

If you want to write a guide to do something, great. You contribute to the collective knowledge base, but there is absolutely no need having this combative attitude towards somebody are doing the same.

You talk like part of the problem.
How would this kind of software interact with a password manager? If I ever copy my password, will it be stored in an insecure way somewhere?
Re:Apple’s macOS Ventura – New Security Changes on Sunday June 19, 2022 @05:57PM (#31803934)
Not the original poster, but I think the worry is that how can a password manager survive in a passwordless future.

Will major players be too powerful that no competing solutions will realistically exist.

> “Blanketing thousands of people across the company with repeated unsolicited emails and asking them to sign letters and fill out unsponsored surveys during the work day is not acceptable,” she said.

If this were true, I don’t see a problem here. This is harassment

It's probably in the US. A friend of mine was physical chemist and was paid in the 20k range per year several years ago and it was barely livable. It's not surprising that a junior developer getting paid 5 times of that.
Re:What are you doing, WordPress.com? on Sunday April 03, 2022 @10:06AM (#30897010)
I remember back then when Vimeo started charging content creator somebody did a good analysis showing that they are basically charging what you would have to spend if you hosted the video yourself. Is this the case here for WordPress?

Free resources are never free. I hope changes like this will pave the ways for the future of self hosting.

DP 1.4 support is broken again, maybe that's why?
The title could also be why communism is fundamentally incompatible with human society.

The realization of human nature really disappoints.

Re:Scientist busts myths about how humans burn calories on Thursday February 17, 2022 @11:49PM (#30382243)
This is interesting. However I would love to learn more about the “doubly labeled water method”. For example, how accurate is the test result? What’s the individual variance? Do animals and humans react the same way to it?

It’s important because all the findings seem to be based on it, but the specifics are not discussed.

Re:A Quick Introduction to R on Sunday February 06, 2022 @10:46AM (#30233525)
On the contrary, I'm not a fan of R, I'm only a fan of Hadley Wickham and how the Tidyverse and ggplot2's API are designed.

They are just incredibly intuitive and easy to use. ggplot2 has fundamentally influenced how I think about plotting.

With my limited experience, I have never seen anything like it.

Re:Switching from macOS to Pop_OS on Saturday January 15, 2022 @04:39PM (#29950578)
After my previous Linux experience with Ubuntu 10 years ago, I gave pop os a try last year and was surprised how good it was.

I think the engineers at System76 really know what they are doing and am excited about their new DE.

From Cuomo to this, I came to the realization that probably it’s not the governors really believed what they do or what they say, by shifting the public focus to something else more bizarrely, more outrageous, they will successfully quell any demands on accountability.
Re:YouTube had censored North Korean defector Yeonmi Park on Thursday December 02, 2021 @11:03AM (#29417866)
Apparently, the video can be found via search or on her page currently.

However, it was tweeted was two days ago.

It's unclear whether it's a bug on Youtube side or real censorship actually happened or user error.

At this stage this is not a valid censorship case against Youtube.

I would remove the post if I could.

Unless, it's Chinese government. In that case, Apple handle over their control over database to Guizhou-Cloud Big Data
Re:Singapore about to Execute Man with Mental Disability on Saturday November 06, 2021 @02:34PM (#29132661)
a Malaysian man convicted of smuggling heroin into the city-state, arguing that he should be exempt under international law because he has an intellectual disability.

"During his 2010 trial, he claimed he was coerced into carrying the drugs, but he later changed his account, saying he had attempted to smuggle the heroin because he needed money. The court concluded that his story of duress was fabricated and sentenced him to death.

In 2015, he appealed to have his sentence commuted to life in prison. His lawyers argued that his I.Q. of 69, which is just below the internationally recognized threshold of 70 for determining whether someone has an intellectual disability, made him incapable of fully understanding his actions. They also argued that he suffered from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a drinking disorder, which affected his judgment and impulse control."

The title is quite misleading by itself.

Re:Docker Desktop no longer free for large companies on Tuesday August 31, 2021 @05:36PM (#28374002)
On the one hand, I'm sad that I probably have to uninstall docker desktop because I only use it for small side projects, on the other I understand Docker Inc's need to monetize as a for profit company.

I do have a genuine question though. Can a company just change their pricing structure and make it effective immediately(I understand they have a grace period here)? I guess for free tiers they probably can, because the users have never paid them, but what if I'm a paying customer? Could Docker simply say sorry we have changed our pricing from next billing cycle(or tomorrow) you have to pay 100% more. Could they legally do something like that?

Re:Helm is a personal server that lives where you do on Sunday August 29, 2021 @10:13PM (#28352241)
If I'm drawing an analogy here, owning your server and hosting your own services is like having your own house and having a SAAS is like renting a house.

A lot of people want to own their house while too many service/hardware providers are trying to be your landlords.

This is a cool idea but I think having a mandatory subscription killed it for me. It does not even provide an illusion that I can still have my own services intact and running indefinitely no matter what happens to or at the service provider. This is especially crucial when you consider how much of a pain switching email is.

Do I move out of Google just to be dependent on another company that requires a subscription for the illusion of owning my data? On top of that I have to deal with all the hassle that comes with it? I don't think so.

Re:Rally, a novel privacy-first data sharing platform on Saturday June 26, 2021 @03:55PM (#27645247)
There is nothing wrong with it.

Like I mentioned, there are perfect legitimate reasons and need to do it.

However, the best privacy practice is to never share it. If you share, then it is no longer privacy first. The goals which one wants to achieve come first. I'm not saying it will not have adequate privacy protection. But it's not "privacy first" because it introduces the risk to someone's privacy for the benefit of something. That something comes first.
