when in a rush I will put in gibberish instead going through the pw manager steps and rely on resetting the pw at a later time
Re:The Session You Cannot take with you on Friday July 31, 2026 @08:04AM (#49122062)
I created my own AWS Cognito userpool just for tailscale. I recall the webfinger redirect was frustrating to get right but I refused to use Google/Apple as a gatekeeper to my own network so I had all the motivation to get it working.

Most likely it's the cable(s) and not the monitor. Another commenter posted: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/73861... Try a higher quality cable or a clip-on ferrite ring.
Re:Show HN: I rewrote my Mac Electron app in Rust on Wednesday May 28, 2025 @01:36PM (#44118550)
I'm neither a Mac uset nor is our team exploring a Rust rewrite ... however I appreciate this post. This is what I hope for from "Show HN", a just long enough summary of technical tradeoffs required to solve a real-world problem for a relatable small business (admittedly that part is an assumption). Thank you for sharing your experience.
Re:IO Devices and Latency on Thursday March 13, 2025 @01:32PM (#43355518)
The level of your effort really shows through. If you had to ballpark guess, how much time do you think you put in? and I realize keyboard time vs kicking around in your head time are quite different

Make sure you're on the latest BIOS as many improvements have been made since early AM5.

Anecdata: I just bought a used AM5 mobo and threw in this memory kit CMK64GX5M2B6400C32; hitting 6400 was as simple as turning on XMP and that's it.

Re:Ask HN: Take AWS to small claims court? on Friday September 08, 2023 @11:22AM (#37434745)
Thanks everyone for the advice.

No one has chimed in about some "magic words/phrasing" I need to use.

Like I mentioned, it seems like the rep will escalate it to another refund department if I say something in a particular way.

Ask HN: Take AWS to small claims court?

Has any one of you ever taken Amazon to small claims court?I've been trying to get a very obvious mistaken charge reversed from my account and I've lost patience at this point.I'm strongly considering dying on a hillside to prove a point but frankly I'm not sure I care enough and may just dispute it with my CC company. Although I'm sure that will have extremely annoying repercussions as well....

Providing user UI flexibility is never a "problem".

Obviously there is a tradeoff - there is always a tradeoff in software.

Having just gone through a re-design, our team's tradeoff was how much time to spend tweaking media-queries/screen-size responsivity for the countless permutations of device-resolutions & dpis vs just picking a handful of density-levels.

Ask HN: Has Spotify Discover Weekly changed/fallen off a cliff?

I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing something similar.I've had a (family) paid account for many, many years primarily because of Discover Weekly. For a typical playlist, I'd downvote/remove < 10% of the songs but during the last month or so the % has grown and grown. This week it has gotten to the point I'm removing nearly every song and only keeping a handful.I'm strongly considering...

Re:Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon) on Wednesday October 12, 2022 @09:09PM (#33185954)
ditto. just cancelled my monthly $ubscription too
Re:Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon) on Wednesday October 12, 2022 @09:08PM (#33185943)
I'd start polishing up that resume.

I was responsible for roughly a dozen Signal converts. They will all be uninstalling when this takes effect. It seems like everyone else in this thread is saying the same.

Prepare for a mass exodus of users.

None of us want to be responsible for training/tech support for how to use 2 messaging apps for non-technical users

Re:Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon) on Wednesday October 12, 2022 @08:56PM (#33185862)
The complete lack of awareness of this decision is astounding, the userbase is about to disappear. Those of us that convinced non-technical friends and family to use Signal are now expected to explain to them how to juggle 2 messaging apps? yeah it's not happening, the uninstall rate is going to be huge and there will be no recovery of those users
Re:Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon) on Wednesday October 12, 2022 @08:49PM (#33185811)
I have nothing new to add other than to simply parrot what has been said a few hundred times above.

This is a terrible decision.

It took significant effort to convert close friends and family to signal and was only palatable due to it becoming the default messaging app on Android.

Not only will I be likely to field a ton of tech support once this occurs, I'll also likely need to recommend a completely different app.

Looks like I might just bite the bullet and buy iPhones for my immediate family (without icloud imessage backup)

The neighbor has a catalog of audio recordings of conversations had on the porch 24/7.

Does this school have traffic 24/7 and do you broadcast everything from your front steps via a megaphone (and keep recordings)?

There are many comments here about video/audio recordings from public onto private property however there are various degrees of recording.

If there was a public park across the street from your house and someone setup surveillance-level equipment pointed at your front door, I'm not sure there is a rational judge who would consider this "oh well, they're on public land, nothing we can do here".

probably should just head to UrbanDictionary for looking up slang
Backup 1: Make a huge show of dumping 9% of the company at the lowest possible share price (that does not trigger any SEC scrut6). Deride the current board as inept and having no vision for the future of the company. Watch the price plummet and acquire the injured version for less than his initial offer. Admittedly that doesn't work as well with a 1 year poison pill delay the board just triggered.

Backup 2: Continue making Twitter polls that potentially steer/force the current management's hand into the changes he wants to see implemented regardless.

this is a 2-1 state court appeal where the dissenting judge was the senior judge that cited potential state vs federal issues. my take is this is far from any sort of definitive decision.
I've been at a Microsoft/.NET shop for over a decade that has a 90's MS employee as a key board director. However, MS is making such poor decisions with Windows and MSSQL licensing that it's become a high priority to migrate off everything they do going forward. I think it will take enterprise a few years but MS has signed their own death warrant on their old stack - good thing they bought GitHub and went all in on WSL.
Re:Alpine Linux: Brilliant Linux Distro on Thursday March 10, 2022 @07:36PM (#30634659)
"local LAN" = local Local ....

For shame, but I'm leaving my comment as is

Re:Alpine Linux: Brilliant Linux Distro on Thursday March 10, 2022 @07:30PM (#30634603)
Question, we're a long time Windows shop and just recently have been spinning up some linux containers (redis, rabbitmq). The decision fell to me and I went with Ubuntu. (I'm confident in our networking team that everything is firewalled well and not externally accessible so these are local LAN only.)

Should I instead be using Alpine? If someone is isn't distro aficionado and is utilizing "mainstream" docker images, what's the recommendation?

Re:Inflation propagates unevenly on Thursday March 10, 2022 @07:17AM (#30626076)
I had the same expectation, maybe adding "Economic" to the start of the title would help.
Re:Google Ads suspended me and turned a deaf ear on Friday March 04, 2022 @08:42PM (#30563156)
There are only a handful of companies that have crossed the $1 Trillion USD market cap threshold.

Tgese are some of the richest entities in all of human history and their direct customers cannot even get a reply to an inquiry that has destroyed their livelihood - and there is no law or regulatory body that requires them to.

This is embarrassing as an American citizen but moreover as a human in our current society - what exactly do we value/reward that this gets barely any attention?

Re:I love you, Hacker News, but you’re toxic on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @12:28PM (#30349615)
I made the same realization in myself, but unfortunately in my 30s rather than my 20s. Engineering, whether software or hardware, is all about thoroughly understanding a problem and dissecting it to the nth degree. The better you are at this, the quicker you notice the problems with an initial, creative idea.

"It's easy to be a critic."

If left unchecked, all that is done is the refinement of a skill that is able to find the potential hurdles/blockers in any problem space.

However, when part of a balanced team this attribute can save time going down dead-end paths. But it requires a yin to the yang - a perpetual optimist that won't take no for an answer.

For those of us that are on the analytical end of the spectrum, it is important to realize that noticing an early issue does not equate to the problem space being a waste of time that is unsolvable.1 Instead, use your super-power for good to accelerate finding the efficienct solution to the problem that some has identified and clearly expressed (which is itself itself a super power; and you may have just found your startup founder).

Re:Ask HN: How to make the most out of time at university? on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @10:33AM (#30347779)
My biggest regret about my college/university time is not having expanded my breadth of experiences. In your teens and twenties you are at a point in life when you have not made too many decisions that set you on a particular path. It is an oportune moment to explore the vast buffet of life. As one gets older you find yourself moving in a particular direction and generally self-limit your own ability to deviate too far from the area you currently in. Add in the sunk cost fallacy and most people just continue the inertia of their early decisions.

Expose yourself to everything you have the least bit of interest in. Go to all kinds of group meetings, sign up for classes that seem interesting, talk to people that are different from you, etc. It is very likely you will never have such easy access to these possibilities ever again.

Do not believe that you must declare a major immediately and that it will be set in stone for the rest of your life.

TLDR: explore your interests without fear

Re:Tell HN: Stack Exchange (Stack Overflow) is now blocking Tor on Tuesday February 08, 2022 @06:06AM (#30257079)
I wasn't aware that existed and obviously that would make any scraping utterly useless
Re:Tell HN: Stack Exchange (Stack Overflow) is now blocking Tor on Tuesday February 08, 2022 @05:47AM (#30256951)
It potentially could be related to all of the "knock-off" websites that scrape StackExchange data. Maybe they are going outbound on various Tor nodes and getting the IPs blacklisted as a result of reading thousands of pages too rapidly.
Most companies that went in early on the cloud implemented S3. By providing an S3 compatible API, a storage provider can make it extremely easy for companies to switch.

You don't even need to support the full API for this purpose as a very common use case is just uploading files for backups.

No one is arguing for S3 to become the one new standard, it is more like supporting the most common import/export file type in Photoshop/Blender.

If you have existing running processes in place and all you need to update is connection string and auth to save a ton of money then you are much more likely to do so.
