This seems like standard well off bay area family to me TBH... Houses in Cupertino cost $3,000,000 (7 figures), and the owners drive around a pair of $75,000 Teslas.
Re:Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says on Saturday September 05, 2026 @12:57PM (#49578393)
The everyone-should-try-harder mentality doesn't work either unfortunately. It would be great if everyone rode bikes and went vegan but that's never going to happen so we have to stop making people feel bad for buying gas cars and eating cheeseburgers because it just causes division which ultimately hurts progress.
Re:Global warming has accelerated significantly on Friday March 06, 2026 @12:45PM (#47278398)
It's about 60 mpg per passenger to fly domestically and 90 mpg per passenger to fly internationally.

If you have a family of 4, you can think of it as the equivalent of a 15 mpg vehicle for domestic flight and 22 mpg vehicle for international flight. So somewhere in the range of a full-size pickup truck.

But -- when you fly, you go very far. If you go on vacation to Hawaii from San Francisco once a year with your family, that's the equivalent of driving a Ford F-150 for 5000 miles. If you visit India or China that's 15,000 Ford F-150 miles! In a single trip, more than what most people drive in an entire year!

So you can make a big difference just preferring local vacations instead of remote ones.

Honestly it's this line that did it for me:

> AlphaEvolve enhanced the efficiency of Google's data centers, chip design and AI training processes — *including training the large language models underlying AlphaEvolve itself*.

Singularity people have been talking for decades about AI improving itself better than humans could, and how that results in runaway compounding growth of superintelligence, and now it's here.

Re:Every UUID Dot Com on Friday December 06, 2024 @06:00PM (#42345501)
I tried to find the biggest UUID and if I got it right, it's

99999999-9999-4999-9999-999999999999

(note the 4 in the 3rd block)

I'm curious why it's not 99999999-9999-9999-9999-999999999999 (all 9s)?

You're probably well aware and quickly fixed the issue after the photo was taken, but I just need to say it's a really bad idea to have ANYTHING in an infants crib that they can use to block their airways like that.

Glad to see she's doing well and hope you have good times with her once she's home!

> So basically we would like to cut down on using oil by… burning more oil.

For now. Until we build more renewable energy plants. Miles per ton of CO2 is better with EVs no matter how you power the EV.

> And how are EVs more efficient then standard cars if they have less range and don’t work as well in certain climates and can’t go where the electricity is not readily available?

EVs are less convenient, no argument there. But they're still more efficient. Even in cold climates. 90% of new vehicles sold in Norway are EVs or plug-in hybrids.

> We are already polluting the environment by burning stuff for electricity, how does any of this help?

Switch to renewables and then you stop burning stuff. Until then, burning oil for power is better than burning oil to propel cars.

> And where to we get all the chemicals for the batteries and what do we do with them when they are useless?

Tesla recycles 90% of the important metals in their batteries.

Burn the oil that would have gone into cars in a power plant... You can propel an EV 2-3x as far as an ICE vehicle with the same amount of oil because power plants are much more efficient than car engines.
Re:The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers on Monday November 28, 2022 @03:07PM (#33778812)
Do people ever give you grief about the climate impact of owning a vehicle like that?

I don't mean to judge and am genuinely curious -- I have a fairly fuel inefficient vehicle as well and it weighs on me sometimes that I maybe should try different, more climate friendly hobbies (like, stopping overlanding and pick up knitting or something...)

Looks really cool! I'm listening to the neuroscience tailor one now. I've been itching for the past couple of years now (ever since having a kid) to dive back into some old hobbies that I haven't been able to make time for. Things like this are really inspiring. Looking forward to more episodes!

AI-generated entertainment in general is going to be awesome.

From the article, regarding sea level rise:

When ice shelves lose large chunks, it does not raise sea level because these
bodies are already afloat. However, the loss of an ice shelf can speed up the
seaward flow of the nonfloating glacial ice behind it, and this ice can in turn
contribute to sea-level rise. Researchers have estimated that the loss of all
the ice that the Larsen C ice shelf currently holds back would raise global
  sea levels by 10 centimetres.

A 25-pound projectile traveling at 4500 miles per hour carries as much momentum as a jumbo jet at cruising speed: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=25+pounds+*+4500+miles+...

We know the impact a hijacked jumbo jet can have on buildings...now imagine being able to sustain that level of destruction at a rate of 10 times/minute with hardly any power or material consumption.

Yes! This article will make a great addition to her college application!

(Joking aside, this is literally the mentality a school system like this encourages)

I don't understand. This is pretty much the definition of a dictionary attack. The dictionary is just stored and accessed through Google rather than packaged with the program.
