Do you recall when the republican party blocked Obama's ability to appoint in the run-up to the last election? (parent commenter is referencing this)

Git LFS ;)
I agree the lawyer is doing the right thing for his role - perhaps I should have phrased as "ridiculous for this argument to be taken seriously" or some such.
If you believe this argument, it should apply to everyone going through the criminal justice system and not just this case.

Does that seem like a question that should be contemplated in this case?

> “It is, unfortunately, no exaggeration to say that a prison sentence today can amount to the imposition of a serious health crisis, even a death sentence, given the BOP’s (Federal Bureau of Prisons) current inability to control the spread of the coronavirus,” Levandowski’s attorneys wrote.

I find this ridiculous for his attorneys to use as a defense against his potential incarceration. While likely true (and certainly deplorable on its own), this applies to anyone going through the criminal justice system and Levandowski is no special case. Conditions in prison should hardly be an excuse for house arrest vs incarceration.

Your good investment from years ago does not make Tesla a good investment at today's price.

I didn't even know you could set inches!

Happy 4th!

I'd run something like that over my TS repos for sure!
Why not store short lived token in a cookie as well?
I've built a large application with Nest as the backend and gotta say, nothing but love for the framework. IMO it is the leader in typescript backend space.

Nest + Typeorm + Postgres + Apollo + NextJS for front end = best of many worlds

Holy shit. They actually put that into a slide deck? Wow

Every human understands that phrase and yet the AI doesn't. That's the gap that has to be fixed.
Re:Ride down into JavaScript dependency hell on Saturday April 11, 2020 @01:42PM (#22842931)
I can't help but find it ironic that in middle of this oft-repeated JS bitch fest the author's own company is promoting their NPM package.
Re:Discord outage postmortem on Monday March 23, 2020 @11:48AM (#22665153)
I don't put this on Discord - the word "server" has a substantially different meaning to varying constituencies and Discord is certainly not the first to use it in a way different from CS101.
Seems like we're going full circle with Twitter now.
Re:HQ Trivia shuts down after acquisition falls through on Friday February 14, 2020 @06:13PM (#22331383)
What a quick ride. It was so popular, so quickly. There must not have been great retention? Or poor monetization?
It is a given and is basic economics. Supply and demand curves certainly apply to housing.

Increasing housing shifts the supply line to the right - which satisfies greater demand at a lower price, all else equal. That is what "many would move to SF if housing was only slightly cheaper" means in economic terms.

Shifting the demand curve to the right is not driven by quantity of housing, but instead by things like quality of life, supply of jobs, etc. Its the difference between the slope of the line and its position.

More housing is not a panacea for homelessness - but supply and demand are real. Increasing supply will decrease equilibrium price; this increase in affordability is one measure (of the many necessary) to help homelessness.
The "BY" in YIMBY is referring to our existing back yards. There's a significant gap between YIMBYs and what you described.
Re:Ask HN: Do you store permissions in a JWT? on Friday September 20, 2019 @02:06PM (#21029580)
It just seems that storing permissions doesnt scale and quickly. If you have even just 3 or 4 crud endpoints, you end up with read:this, write:this, read:that, write:that, etc etc.

Makes me think the DB call needs to be made (and yea, can be cached).

Ask HN: Do you store permissions in a JWT?

If you store your permissions in your JWT, how do you handle changing permissions? Is the overhead of a database query for permissions worth the security gain of instantly able to change permissions? (IE use JWT for authentication, check permissions for authorization on each request)What is the general consensus these days on handling permissions WRT JWTs?

The vast majority of tracking is about behavioral ad targeting.
Re:The Brewing Battle Over Adblock on Tuesday April 07, 2015 @04:56PM (#9337099)
Considering the widespread disapproval of the pop-ups of yore, it is crazy how obtrusive ads are on such a rise right now. I think that speaks volumes as to the ad supported business model - if you have to sell 50+% of your real estate to advertisers to stay in business, something is wrong.

There are plenty of good reasons to run an ad blocker and I think yours makes it a necessity. Even "decent" ads from well known brands can be unsavorily flashy and thus dangerous to someone with epilepsy.

Re:The Brewing Battle Over Adblock on Tuesday April 07, 2015 @03:40PM (#9336601)
Yesterday's morality of ad block thread generated hundreds of comments arguing every direction of the ad block debate.

I wrote this piece to cover the current reality - there is no discussion of the morality - and to acknowledge that our team is focusing on helping to create an ad-free business model for content creators, by giving users the ad blocker they want.

I'm looking for feedback. Why is this a bad idea? Why is it a good idea?
