This was a truly great game. Thanks for these links. Many hours were spent flipping switches and not really understanding how to fly this thing but it was all so cool anyway.
I also bike to work every day. I was not having chronic pain, but mild discomfort and one thing that made a difference was changing my bike handlebars to more be more upright instead of a flatbar style. These are the handlebars I ended up with and couldn't be happier. http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/handlebars... They Allow my wrists to stay straight instead of bent back.
Re:Good bye, Google Maps… thanks for all the fish on Wednesday January 11, 2012 @03:45PM (#3453594)
Rest assured that we will be adding the subway stops and various other awesome related data sets shortly.
Re:Ask HN: Review my startup, http://UpOut.com on Tuesday April 26, 2011 @02:38PM (#2486570)
Hey looks very nice! Do you have/will you provide RSS or an API to get at this data? I would love to include it in a small side project (mobile app for kid-friendly activities and restaurants in NYC), of course with proper crediting/linking, etc.
Re:Before Driving a Zipcar, Consider Liability Insurance on Tuesday April 26, 2011 @02:15PM (#2486468)
It's a cheap shot for sure, but it would be nice if zipcar offered some extended liability coverage.

EDIT: If any hn'ers have experience with non-owner's auto insurance and didn't totally hate the company, please let me know.

Well done!

Would also recommend 'The Non-Designers Design Book' for base knowledge about layout and typography.
Re:Boxer: The DOS game emulator that’s fit for your Mac. on Thursday March 24, 2011 @11:14AM (#2364402)
Epic Pinball! Woo! Donated 10. Should probably give some to DosBox too :)
Re:Joyent: 54+ hours of downtime on Monday February 28, 2011 @11:45AM (#2271777)
Holy crap! Fucking Howe! I was on that server three years ago for about two weeks before I could no longer take it. It was a misconfigured piece of junk when it was brand new. I've had a lot of success with Web Faction since then.
Re:Greplin (YC W10) Search Engine Tackles Facebook, Twitter on Wednesday February 16, 2011 @08:44PM (#2229293)
This is what Google should have been building instead of Buzz or Wave.
Re:Ask HN: Best way to write an app for both Android and iOS? on Thursday February 10, 2011 @08:13AM (#2201808)
The performance and feel of Google maps inside a WebView is terrible compared to the native maps applications. I recently attempted this and was incredibly disappointed. Decided eventually after fighting with Titanium before trying Phonegap to just do native versions.
I think maybe I should just set up a direct deposit between my bank account and rovio.
Re:Kona, an open-source implementation of the K language on Wednesday January 05, 2011 @01:28PM (#2071861)
To answer myself, there's a lot of material here: https://anonymous:[email protected]/trac
Re:Kona, an open-source implementation of the K language on Wednesday January 05, 2011 @01:25PM (#2071838)
Nice! One of my friends works with K and I've always wanted to play around with it but licenses are super expensive. I need a manual now though :)
Re:Google tracks you. We don't. An illustrated guide on Monday January 03, 2011 @11:16AM (#2063564)
I've been using Duck Duck Go as my primary search for the last month - it's pretty great! And if you need to fallback to google because you want a map or something else there are a bunch of ! shortcuts to go right there. (!map is most frequently used by me)
Re:The Oatmeal (online cartoon) earns ~$1000/day on Wednesday December 29, 2010 @11:22AM (#2049142)
Good for him. Seems like he's working hard for it :)
Re:Would love your feedback on this startup (+ free use) on Monday December 27, 2010 @03:42PM (#2043595)
This is a great idea - any company that does training or demos should be interested in this kind of thing. I was thinking about trying to put together a product around this area, but of course, you know the drill :)

My old employer needs virtualized labs for MS Project teaching - email me and maybe I can arrange a meeting with them.

Re:CoffeeScript hits 1.0 -- Happy Holidays, HN on Saturday December 25, 2010 @11:19AM (#2039042)
This rules! And thanks to everyone in #coffeescript for answering my stupid questions as they come up :)
Re:RIP Things on Wednesday December 22, 2010 @11:49AM (#2031683)
IMO 1password got this so right. Use Dropbox, make it work great. I'd wager a large % of things users are already hooked up with Dropbox.
Re:Share HN: googly app template (html+css) on Tuesday December 21, 2010 @10:59AM (#2028146)
Ha! I was about to go put together yet another layout like this. Thanks a bunch!
Please explain the - In office music bullet. I worked at a consultancy once that piped a local top 100 station over the PA all day long and it drove me mad hearing the same awful songs/advertisements/DJs ad nauseum.
Re: on Tuesday November 16, 2010 @08:12AM (#1909925)
Seriously. How do I turn this instant preview mess off? It is truly terrible.
Re:Ask HN: What do you love about your office? on Sunday November 14, 2010 @11:34PM (#1905232)
+1 for natural light.
Re:Ask HN: How to tell quickly if someone is professional? on Sunday October 24, 2010 @02:44PM (#1826846)
A very professional answer! You'd be surprised at the number of organizations and individuals that don't have some sort of backup solution in place, so the question will also filter out those. Even if you have backups or the data isn't 'irreparably' lost I'd imagine you agonized a bit from causing your coworkers a few days of pain, or if you need to restore from backups, perhaps a few hours of downtime? I guess I should change my question from using the word irreparably.
Re:Ask HN: How to tell quickly if someone is professional? on Sunday October 24, 2010 @02:04PM (#1826730)
I like asking people when the last time they've done irreparable harm to data was. (deleting a database table, formatting something they shouldn't have, etc...) Those who say never are liars. Those who have agony in their faces as they answer but can't tell me what they've done to prevent the situation from occurring in the future or those who don't care are pretty unprofessional. Those who regale us with heroic stories of accepting the blame for their mistakes, fixing it in the best way possible and putting safeguards in place to minimize the possibility of it occurring again are pros in my book.
Re:Ask HN: What do you drink? on Sunday October 24, 2010 @10:37AM (#1826192)
- tap water

- coffee w/1% milk, frothed.

- usually gin (Hendricks is a fav), lately I've been exploring american whiskey/rye. Holy cow is this stuff amazing: http://whistlepigwhiskey.com/

- at the office our senior geek keeps a bottle of santa teresa 1796 rhum. That's a staple on chilly Friday afternoons in the later part of the year.

Re:Why do programmers hate Microsoft? on Thursday October 21, 2010 @12:42PM (#1816257)
1) Internet Explorer 6

2) Internet Explorer 7

3) Price/quality of Visual Studio compared to other offerings - we can talk about memory footprint, MSDN subscriptions, odd versioning conflicts when trying to develop for SharePoint - oh wait.

4) SharePoint

5) http://i.zdnet.com/blogs/fake-steve-ballmer.jpg Honestly, this man disgusts me. His attitude and public reactions as the figurehead of Microsoft make me want to have nothing to do with Microsoft

6) Lack of POSIX compliant shell.

7) In small companies (and most families), programmers end up being IT staff. When was the last time any of you had to reformat or spend hours of your life cleaning a Mac or Linux machine because of malware? I'm not ignorant enough to think the gilded age of Mac and Linux being virtually malware free will last forever, but hey, enjoy it while it lasts.

8) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare Which one is right for you? Fuck you! It's a desktop or a server. The consumer should have one choice, appropriately priced that lets them do everything they can.

9) The ridiculous price of MS Office Suite.

10) Webforms, VIEWSTATE. Seriously, fuck you VIEWSTATE, whoever designed this dumb ass approach should have their computing license revoked.
