Couldn't have said it better myself. Just came off as an agry rather pointless rant to me.
Re:Block Ads in Apps on Android on Wednesday February 20, 2019 @01:49PM (#19210754)
None of these DNS blockers have ever worked on YouTube for me, nor any of my other streaming apps.

Honestly the only real solution I've found is to use Ublock Origin in Firefox for Android.

Are paper actually better than plastic if the plastic ones are disposed of properly?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that only the text server?
Re:Crafting a high-performance TV user interface using React on Thursday January 12, 2017 @09:46PM (#13388025)
How many people still use TVs these days? Everyone I know don't even own one anymore, though my friends circle might not be that representative of society as a whole.

What about the problem that solar also needs batteries?

I have the same problem. If anybody has any good resources, please let me know.

Please elaborate.

Orgzly was previously the only alternative on mobile, which was closed source. I'm really happy to see this exist!
Re:Linus Torvalds still wants Linux to take over the desktop on Saturday August 13, 2016 @09:42AM (#12281463)
Install Virtualbox and try it out. I'd say it's gotten way better.

1. Do games even run better on Steam OS? Last I checked they ran quite noticeably slower.

2. Steam is still a proprietary platform, though I can see how their support would benefit all distros' gaming capabilities.

Re:Linus Torvalds still wants Linux to take over the desktop on Saturday August 13, 2016 @09:38AM (#12281447)
Who even uses features exclusive to desktops anymore? I do for development, I'm sure video editors and the like do, but which ordinary consumer does?

The future of desktops I see is something like:

Chrome OS: 70% of computers for ordinary use

Windows: 20% of computers for gaming

OS X: 5% of computers for video editing

Linux: 5% of computers for development

Re:Linus Torvalds still wants Linux to take over the desktop on Saturday August 13, 2016 @09:35AM (#12281429)
I don't see why you make that comparison. Many distros (Ubuntu comes to mind) certainly cater to the same market as Windows and OS X, and do it very well.

What are you trying to say? You could make the same argument for any piece of software in existence.

Re:Linus Torvalds still wants Linux to take over the desktop on Saturday August 13, 2016 @09:27AM (#12281399)
I don't think this is the problem at all. Ubuntu, for example, is perfectly usable and a very good alternative to Windows.

The main problem, I'd say, is that there really isn't much of a reason to switch. People who buy a computer don't have any incentive to go through the with hassle.

If computers came with Ubuntu pre-installed I'm sure people would use those without a second thought.

It's not nearly that straight forward. Many "fixes" would create incompatible blockchains between the different versions. In practise you need to get consensus before your fork can even be used.

Why not open source it? He would still be in control of the vision of the project.

I'm curious as to why nobody here has yet to comment on OPs claims about "Hedonic Adaptation". I've been told by various sources that this is the way the brain works, even in my recent biology class where the teacher would say that "dopamine sensitivity" was to blame.

It seems like a really big deal to me if he's right, and could really change your outlook on life.

Ask HN: Have any of you switched to Bash on Windows?

I've owned a Mac for about a year now, and it's worked very well. I do however miss being able to game on my laptop, and with the announcement of Bash on Windows I'm thinking of making Windows my sole environment. Those of you who have tried this: What's your experience been like? Is it inferior in any significant way to your workflow?

Re:Ask HN: How do you learn to read source code? on Monday May 02, 2016 @09:10PM (#11617108)
Your comment touches a lot on how to get an idea of the overall architecture, and I thank you for it.

My main problem though is that I can't seem to see the purpose of functions, because more often than not they are written in a, to me, foreign way.

An example I have is this uncommented if statement:

`if (tab.url.toLowerCase().indexOf("https://facebook.com") > -1)`

Should it be clear to me immediately that this means "If the target website is open"? It took me a solid minute just to understand this statement.

Are there some common design patterns I should memorise?

Ask HN: How do you learn to read source code?

I'm a decent solo programmer and freelance web developer and I've created some simple back end programs together with a friend. But when it comes to understanding even the most simple open source projects I can't for the life of me understand what's going on. There are so many functions relating to each other, so many classes that I just get lost. I'd probably get lost in everything my friends...

Re:Taskwarrior โ€“ intelligent TODO list on Saturday April 30, 2016 @04:58PM (#11603549)
>Why isn't there just a plain `brew install task warrior`?

That would be `brew install task`. I'm guessing their thinking is that brew isn't part of OS X, though this is silly IMO. Homebrew is basically a requirement if you own a Mac and want to use the command line at all.
