Apparently, it was Meta that was the other main contender to hire him. Mark Zuckerberg was impressed by OpenClaw, but, I guess OpenAI wound up outbidding him. It is surprising that Anthropic and Google had little interest.

There is no excuse for corruption. However, everyone in all countries should ask themselves whether or not most of the representatives in their congress/parliament would, if investigated, be found guilty of the same sort of corruption. Power corrupts.

From the tone of your post, you might be suffering from a bit of burnout. If that's the case, then I would recommend taking any extremely low paying and low stress retail job for the rest of this year. Perhaps, when January rolls around, having had a chance to mentally decompress, you might once again consider a position in the startup world. In this job market, given your situation, you're going to have a really tough time applying for jobs at large companies while hoping to beat out all the other job applicants for that $150K+ position. If you're willing to consider taking a lower salary, I would recommend that you focus on applying for jobs at tiny startups where money is tight and the base salary they are offering is $100K or less. A lower salary means that there will be fewer job applicants that you have to beat out for the position. Right now, it might sting to take a lower salary, but, the job market might pick up in a year or two, and then it might be a lot easier to land a high paying position.

I will agree that you could say that, at $5, he's ripping people off by taking advantage of people who are desperate for even one minute of human interaction. If he priced it at $1, would he still be unethical and exploitative? Does everything have to be free? At even that price, is it still a ripoff? For me, the answer would be determined by the value of his feedback to people.

It's amazing to watch absurdly futuristic tech from 1960's TV become reality. I'm used to seeing that from Star Trek, but this one is from "The Prisoner".

It is because you are looking for remote work. Drop that, and you'll quickly succeed. Linked In reports that remote jobs get double the number of applicants. I'd say most people have no idea how much harder it is to land a remote job.

Re:Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
on Sunday May 12, 2024 @03:29PM (#40336868)
There have been plenty of moments in history where if a country doesn't resort to conscription then it won't continue to exist. If a country exists in a rough neighborhood, then its people must, unfortunately, expect to be enslaved for a few years of their life. In some ways, humanity has made little progress in the last hundred years. It's a shame that some large countries continue to have leaders that are so determined to expand the size of their country no matter the cost. It's also a shame that so many countries continue to trade with such tyrants.

Ukraine seems to be trying to find a middle ground here. Until recently, they only drafted men over the age of 27 (last month it was lowered to 25). Of course, even that age is still going to wreck your demographics. On the other hand, I'm not sure that retired old people have enough stamina to last long on the battlefield. Many of Ukraine's units have been fighting for over a year with no R&R.

There's probably no single cause for such a short average tenure length. However, Marcus Lemonis always blames high turnover on bad management. Every time a boss tries to argue with that premise he immediately shuts them down.

You should mention something about your content moderation or "community guidelines". I'm sure you'll (if you haven't already) establish appropriate policies to ensure you don't wind up hosting illegal content. You might even want to consider doling out "blue checkmarks" for trusted video producers.

You should try to come up with some yardstick for measuring your monthly results. If you can show that you've been delivering value for your subscribers in the past month, and how your paying users could have cashed in using that information, then that might persuade some free users to start paying.

Stay at your job another year. After that, if we're not in a recession, then start looking for your next job. This month, student loan repayments begin, and that could be the event that finally triggers a recession during the first half of 2024. With the large layoffs that have been occurring recently, we may already be heading into a tech job recession.

I've tried out the game and it was a lot of fun. It would be even more fun if there was a built in way for multiple people to play simultaneously where everyone could chat about the decisions and then when everyone has made their choice, then everyone moves on to the next step in the game. Perhaps you could integrate the game with some sort of already existing chat service.
Re:Ask HN: Is it a bad time to take a sabbatical?
on Monday October 09, 2023 @06:39PM (#37826341)
A dangerous move, indeed! It's not the greatest employment market to be taking such a risk. Having said that, you have to weigh ALL of the risks for your situation. Since you fear you might be on the verge of burnout, my opinion is that you must take a break despite the risks. I say this because I once knew someone who suffered burnout, and it took them FOUR YEARS to finally be able to return to the work force. A four month self-imposed break looks a lot better than four years of being unable to work. You may struggle to find work if we wind up in a recession four months from now, but a four month break after so many years in the industry should not raise any big red flags with employers. You don't want to work for any manager who would label you as lazy for taking four months off after so many years.
