News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I would also call it a perverted use of the term super-resolution. NNs perform image manipulations beyond resolution enhancement. They add features based on trained sources.
This was the illusory hope of many of us in the beginning of the IT revolution. Work from anywhere, connected with everybody and the equal distribution of wealth.
I'm pleasantly surprised how Facebook openly admits that this project is a complete failure. I hear almost daily whitewashed NLP results from other companies.
Re:The myth of using Scala as a better Java on Thursday March 02, 2017 @01:53AM (#13772090)
My follow-up question would be: Is Scala still competitive to modern languages like Swift and Rust?

I experienced several drawback according to library quality and code-safety. There are too many small details that left me with an unpleasant feeling (I would take ScalaNLP/Breeze for example).

But my central issue is the VM/GC dependency. In times of GPU computing, native interface programming becomes a burden. The knowledge of object ownership improves code readability. I feel uncomfortable leaving object lifetime to a background process.

Some hints: The Field of View in the demo is bad.(You can query the screen parameters and estimate the viewers distance).

Also your normalmap calculations could be improved.

Re:3D Portability Initiative on Wednesday March 01, 2017 @03:54AM (#13762328)
My personal biggest concern was the re-invention of OpenGL/DX features without the proper knowledge why and how these features can be used. For example I never managed to apply a skeletal animation to a indirect indexed draw call or use transform feedback loops for ray-casting or other deferred shading techniques.
Re:3D Portability Initiative on Wednesday March 01, 2017 @01:54AM (#13761814)
The emulation cost for non Apple Systems would be enormous to implement this solution (= SLOW). SPIR could be used native on most devices.
Re:3D Portability Initiative on Wednesday March 01, 2017 @01:49AM (#13761791)
This proposal makes much more sense than Apples "Metal Only" solution (https://webkit.org/blog/7380/next-generation-3d-graphics-on-...). I liked Metal at the beginning but over time it turned out that it is just another OpenGL/DX flavor with the same old driver/performance problems. Also using SPIR as IL allows the use of the preferred shader language. WebGL Next is about parallelism and abstraction, otherwise there would be absolutely no benefit.

Why should I not use GRSecurity?

Comparison matrix;

In Germany It is also called "Katzentisch" (cat table). This practice got famous during the privatization of state enterprises. It was later supplemented by unsuitable tasks. For example woman had to handle heavy packages without proper equipment.

Calling a competitor to Apple, Facebook and Co "unstoppable juggernaut" is sarcasm, isn't it?
Re:Show HN: Loom – Quick Videos, Faster Than Typing on Tuesday January 17, 2017 @09:47AM (#13417935)
Nice.

For my recordings under Linux I used a rather complex quadruple buffer to record a cam, the desktop, a tablet and reproject the result in real-time into a virtual environment. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmnF2cYa4Co).

Re:Concurrency in Erlang and Scala: The Actor Model on Monday January 16, 2017 @10:01AM (#13410306)
Developing Scala Web and desktop Applications for a long time I thought Actors are sufficient models for concurrency. Than I got into contact with OpenCL/CUDA SIMD processing and now I think that many techniques for parallel data computations like workgroups, item sizes, momory types, barriers are missing from this concept. Concurrency is not only about reactivity but also about processing speed and distribution.

I can assure you that a time travel longer than 0.00125 seconds into the past is not possible for the near future.
Re:Blender for Hackers – 3D modeling is just like using VIM on Thursday January 12, 2017 @03:14AM (#13380668)
I used Blender/Cycles also for the case to render in Game and Application images in high quality. I wrote therefor a Python Export/Importer.

Here is an example: https://virtual-mannequin.eu/img/Full/AnomalyFull.jpg

Re:Germany’s Chinese investment problem on Friday November 25, 2016 @05:45AM (#13035768)
Related News from last week:

The government had cleared the deal on Sept. 8 but Aixtron said that the Economy Ministry had now canceled the clearance certificate for Fujian Grand Chip Investment Fund LP (FGC), a Chinese investment fund controlled by businessman Zhendong Liu, and planned to reopen a review of the takeover. The decision to rescind the approval was based on “previously unknown security-related information,” Germany’s Deputy Economy Minister Matthias Machnig told German daily newspaper Die Welt, without being more specific.

Re:Pascal GPUs on All Fronts Push Nvidia to New Highs on Thursday November 17, 2016 @06:01AM (#12976316)
Sorry for the delayed answer but for verification I had to update my SDK to perform the tests:

Bad Linux support, Bad Debugging, unreliable processing times between vendors (> 40% between same gen. GPUs), missing or buggy functions.

Vulkan Compute shader have exactly the same problems like OpenCL or OpenGL Compute shader.

It should be metioned that the process of statistical data collection can vary between countries.
I'm currently working on anomaly detection algorithms and used the good opportunity (the Shadow Brokers release) to analyze a number of malware applications at once.
Re:Data points that Facebook uses to target ads on Saturday August 20, 2016 @02:42AM (#12325501)
To be honest, I would need the 300$ for living and not for Facebook advertisement.

But lets take the numbers: You spend 300$ and got several thousands in revenue. So I would expect something between a 3% to 15% share for Facebook. If you try to evaluate the volunteered time spend (only for the advertisement) and subtracted it from the result, the numbers would already look much worse.

In my case, as Indy developer, I would have to compete with other software companies and my (cheap < 100.000$) advertisement would most likely show up in unappealing places.

Since most small projects are now exclusively financed by advertisement revenues by itself, Facebook created something like a ponzi scheme and most of the advertisement cost trickles away. With minimal profit-margins you also loose the possibility to pay any attention to product quality.

You should also consider that you also had the choice to go from door to door in your neighborhood for transactions. Since Facebook also owns the main communication channel for the web this possibility is bared.

It is not the question if people hate Facebook instead you should consider that Facebook destroyed the free market.

Finally consider that Facebook, as stock cooperation, is growth-oriented. If the advertisement market is ruined they will sell their user data elsewhere.
