Re:Ask HN: Why aren't there any cars in Nineteen Eighty-Four? on Thursday January 19, 2023 @07:20PM (#34447554)
Orwell was an optimist. We carry view screens in our pocket and can be tracked and monitored backwards in time.
Challenge them by describing a production path that solves both of your problems being business savvy AND being engineering savvy. As Knuth said, the computer doesn’t care if it is spaghetti code—but you won’t accumulate capital with Knuth’s bug rewards, either.

Kindle Keyboard from 2010 is my most used reader in 2022. Still several book’s use on the original battery, text to speech, music, 4 GB, better contrast than illuminated models, works nicely with Calibre, back/forward buttons on both sides. Repairable.

Peak Kindle.

Our Hoopa lived virtually exclusively on shellfish for hundreds of years.

Even as a software engineer, I think I could build from primitive materials a couple of battery operated transceivers to replace the signal flags or horsemen for critical communications. A little basic physics and materials science goes a long way.
Re:How to Remember What You Read on Sunday August 22, 2021 @07:38AM (#28264643)
Absolutely agree. My wife can read and remember everything, but is hard pressed to say how the elements fit into her life.

When I read I recall little but compile the experience as if holographically, enlarging my store of metaphors that surface unbidden as needed.

Often you must lie in order to tell the truth.

After all, language is a poor simulacrum of life, but, then, we use it else "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent" and forced to use shadow puppets deep in Plato's cave.

Re:The Connoisseur of Number Sequences (2015) on Saturday May 08, 2021 @08:55AM (#27086726)
What comes next? 10, 15, 38, 1844...

(Besides the obvious answer of the existence of infinite ways to generate any sequence)

"Magnetization ...1853, 4124, 4818" from the index to The Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (1995)

Too meta?

Re:Is that ship still stuck? on Friday March 26, 2021 @08:00AM (#26591022)
Instead of listing possible technologies and solutions to the problem of re-floating the container ship, why not make an ordered list of worst possible outcomes and approach the problem from the least-worst?

I'll start:

1. pull the ship out of the sand by force with a fleet of tugs which tears a hole in the ship causing an angle of loll and to subsequently keel over.

Incorporate core rights of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights into the body of the Constitution ensuring, as Article 30, that any attempt to weaken or remove any of these rights automatically invalidates the entire Constitution. This makes it too legislatively burdensome to weaken and would unequivocally signal a coup is taking place.
Re:Is Philosophy an Art? on Monday March 15, 2021 @07:39AM (#26464746)
Anything mediated by a mind is an artifice: art.

It may be art from an artisan or craft used in a trade. It may be intellectual such as a mathematical proof. It may arguably be non-human art or bad art--but it is art.

Re:Oral History of John McCarthy (2007) [video] on Friday March 12, 2021 @03:20PM (#26440403)
I knew Professor McCarthy at SAIL back in the day when the Colossal Cave Adventure was making the rounds in the mid-70's. Besides the technical acuity you would expect from the Director, he was genuinely interested and looking for fresh insights in students' first encounter with a less-constrained text puzzle.
Re:Coinbase S-1 on Thursday February 25, 2021 @11:53AM (#26264917)
Bitcoin mining power is concentrated in China with about eight times the hash rate of number two United States, which in turn has a similar hash rate to Russia and Kazakhstan. Rounding out the top six, composing more than 90% of the total world hash rate, is Malaysia and Iran. Do you think these countries share the ideological goals of Satoshi Nakamoto's dream?

I have no doubt that a persistent 51% attack by a cartel of miners would make Bitcoin liquidity an indefinite hard zero for selected "owners" of BTC.

Read and understand the thirteen books of the Elements by Euclid, preferably in the original Greek. This ought to be sufficient for a fundamental understanding of the mathematical method, its power and application--all generated from a handful of axioms and postulates which in turn can be re-visioned to form entirely distinct but consistent systems.
Re:Philosophical Landmines (2013) on Sunday January 31, 2021 @07:37AM (#25978349)
In the 1990’s I compiled a rather large set of cliches and stock phrases intended to help users avoid them in their writing.

I later discovered the compilation was in demand to help users accurately select their cliche of choice—exactly the opposite of my intent.

Decades later I am content that these widely used catchphrases are not damaging our language since they have a broader semiotic purpose of, for example, to show tribal affiliation, e.g., “diamond hands,” and not merely a basket of denotative glyphs.

But that is not to say that a writer is not enriching the language by using a fresh metaphor that adds another sharp facet or just the right amount of bokeh ambiguity to the discussion.

This applies to Crypto as well. Negligible fundamentals. Negligible oversight.
Re:Please don't say just hello in chat (2013) on Saturday January 23, 2021 @12:31PM (#25884261)
I always identify myself and recognize the voice or text of my counterpart before diving into the subject.

At least I do after mistakenly blurted something solely for my spouse into an old group chat.

Re:Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend? on Monday January 18, 2021 @09:00AM (#25821836)
Remembering Marvin Minsky's concept of agents composing a Society of Mind, I have no problem playing poker with myself or watching TikTok to overhear samples of distinct personas that I can try on for a few seconds.

Similarly, original character-driven writing gives me a number of personality templates to fit. Don't ask me what I do with the Shrike.

Re:Decluttering low-Earth orbit: It's time to tidy up space on Monday January 18, 2021 @08:45AM (#25821682)
Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink: thousands of satellites that can be re-positioned en masse in time of need and meanwhile reserve a spot in the LEO surface.

Useful in both communication and in denying the space to other classes of satellites.

When my son has asked me what he should do about courses or employment or even vacation choices, I answer that he ought to choose the path that gives him the most choices.

He has thanked me many time for that advice, which has resulted in a high-value path for him.
